I mean it wasn't exploited to its full potential bc of what happened

Yeah... She should have kept her solo version.

All I ever wanted was love...

Gypsy. To me, nothing else seems to fit as a single, and shouldn't have been one - except for maybe MANiCURE, but even that seems more like a promo single to me. I do like everything on the album though (now that DWUW has been removed).

Should've been:

1. Do What U Want (feat. The Weeknd) [and this would've been perfect cuz he was just breaking out in 2013 and totally would've jumped on DWUW]

2. Applause

3. Sexxx Dreams

/// end era

I can't see any of the other songs doing well in 2013. It's crazy to me, if you flip-flopped ARTPOP and Chromatica, each would've done so much better commercially. SL, ROM, and FW would've absolutely killed in 2013, whereas ARTPOP is the type of experimental pop that would've killed in 2020 (like, Sexxx Dreams was MADE for streaming – now way radio was supporting it back in 2013).

Another reason the "flop" narrative surrounding ARTPOP lacks merit; the final tracklist simply didn't have many options when it came to singles, but the 2 did extremely well -- Applause (peak: #4; huge radio+WW hit) and DWUW (peak: #13; huge radio+WW hit, even without an MV) -- while ARTPOP peaked #1 / was the 9th-best selling album of 2013. GUY wasn't supported by Interscope as a single apparently. That it charted, solely from MV streams and minimal airplay (from Gaga touring stations), is amazing, and it shouldn't be considered an official single IMO.

1. Applause (08/2013) w/ VMAs performance
Aura (promo single with app release; 09/2013)
2. DWUW (10/2013) w/ AMAs performance
Dope (promo single with YT Awards performance; 11/2013)
3. Gypsy (01/2014) w/ Grammys performance
---
4. Brooklyn Nights (04/2014) w/ Roseland Ballroom Residency performance(s)

Official Singles
1. Applause (08/13), 2. DWUW ft. R Kelly (10/13), 3. Gypsy (01/14)

DWUW, as an official single in the leadup to the album w/ MV, would've debuted Top 10/peaked Top 5 easily. It debuted #13 as a promo single at a time it was very hard to Chart with only sales/streams. Gypsy, with a '14 Grammy performance, would've been a smash as the final single. It's a modern EOG and the vulnerable lyrics were on-trend (Royals, Part Of Me, Wrecking Ball). No other song, without changes/ remix were Top 40 material.

Promo Singles
1. Aura (09/13), 2. Dope (11/13)

Aura (w/ MV to launch ARTPOP app) would've been the perfect promo single following Applause. It perfectly represents ARTPOP and like Dope / Gypsy, fit the raw songwriting topping the Charts. Aura is the only other song I could see as a single (remixed w/ Beyonce or someone like will.i.am / Pharrell).

Roseland Ballroom Promo / ACT II Singles
1. Brooklyn Nights (04/13)

Gaga performed a short, acclaimed, residency at the Roseland Ballroom in March/April '14. This would've been a perfect opportunity to close the era w/ Gypsy + a song like Brooklyn Nights that fit the theme of the residency and could've served as a standalone single, included on a Deluxe edition, or led ACT II (EP/LP). That she didn't push a new single (even GUY) hard was a huge miss.

I don't think MV streams counted for Hot 100 back then :messga:

It would have peaked way higher otherwise... :toofunny:

They did; it was a fairly recent change but GUYs Chart position was almost entirely from the MV premier (which broke some records at the time if I remember correctly). This fact is stated in some articles about the way the era fizzled out confusingly (for a “flop” era, the artRAVE, Roseland Residency, and GUY MV premier all did incredibly well).

Similarly, Dope Charted (peak: #8) off streams as well; unfortunately, the streams came from a (nonskippable I believe) ad featuring her YT Awards performance, which only added to the negative press surrounding her at the time. But, again, the demand was still there as it always had been- only a handful of artists have so many high-Charting unofficial singles: Hair, EOG, Dope, DWUW... all Top 20.
