Citing 1989, prominent Romanians urge tougher stand on Belarus

In an open letter to Romania’s president, prime minister and foreign minister, more than 200 cultural and political figures urged Bucharest to intervene “firmly” in support of peaceful demonstrators in Belarus calling for the resignation of President Alexander Lukashenko.

“Through this open letter, we ask you to intervene urgently, honestly and firmly through all channels and means at your disposal in support of the citizens of Belarus, who these days are demonstrating peacefully, in very large numbers, throughout the country,” they wrote.

The authors of the letter recalled Romania’s own experience of protests and police repression during the 1989 overthrow of communist dictator Nicolae Ceausescu.

“Therefore, Romania must not stand aside when the people of Belarus need international solidarity,” they wrote.

Unfortunately, support from European countries doesn't matter if people of Belarus won't start do at least something. Yes, you can protest every Sunday or every day, you can clap and scream 'Уходи' but, obviously, it doesn't work.
