I just don't get the point of the question. Why would a pop fanbase be inherently racist? It doesn't make sense

I think this is a good question that should be discussed, definitely.

I think media, including music, is more disposable in its consumption these days - thanks to streaming and the general culture of the entertainment industries - and it allows for less of a commitment in consuming and therefore less thoughtfulness in what the artist is all about. I think consumers are able to comfortably separate the artist from the art, creating a sort of cognitive dissonance between their own biases and the message/values the artist themselves is all about. :bear:

I am a firm disbeliever in "separating the art from the artist", and, to an extent, the whole concept of "La mort de l'auteu". Of course you can craft and interpret a piece of art in your own way, but I don't believe that the conception of art is exclusive from what created it in its origins.

Within the context of racism in music consumption, I think it's a multi-factor conglomeration of uncritical musical consumption, pre-existing systemic beliefs of prejudice and discrimination, and the overall effect of individualism on musical interpretation.

Hm. I think racism in fandoms, especially with Gaga, is a discussion that deserves to be a little more nuanced and critical.

I completely agree with you.

I think we as a community can do MUCH better when it comes to not just being not racist, but being anti-racist instead.

No clue what all little monsters are like, but the members of this website at the very least are not largely anti-racist.

Excellent point. It's not cutting it to be contrarian/neutral for the mere sake of doing so. That's actually a form of oppression.

I think the better question is why Gaga, an individual who has crafted very straightforward musical projects, charity projects, activism projects etc. around racial, gender, and economic, has attracted a vocal minority of racism, sexism, transphobia, etc.

It's a lot to dissect, and many factors are very complicated and, of course, systemic.

This stuck out to me as well when I first joined the site and I have so many thoughts about it. Like you said, it's probably very layered.
