We know Witness, her last album, wasn't very well received by critics and the GP. I personally found Witness to be a very interesting step forward towards a more interesting side of Katy. Its production and its lyrical content had some innovation to Katy's discography. Sadly, all the backlash caused her to struggle and kind of leave it aside, which is quite disappointing because there were many things that could have evolved this time from that record (Not comparing, but I felt Chromatica was an evolution of what ARTPOP was meant to be). Better executed, Witness could have been Katy's best record to date. And now we have Smile. For my part, I found nothing interesting on this new album. It's more of the same, the lyrics are pretty basic and repetitive, and it's very misguided. Its production sounds very trendy, but there is no innovation whatsoever.
