The Clown

I'm sorry, but no ARTPOP song really stood a chance against Roar or even Blurred Lines. Gypsy would have performed similarly to Applause.

Gypsy #4

Do What U Want would probably do a bit better with a MV. Still, the R. Kelly controversy wouldn't have gone away, radio still wouldn't play it much. In the long run, I think it's way better for Gaga's career that thing never saw the light of day.

Do What U Want #10

Finally, I think Venus would have performed way worse than G.U.Y. with the GP. Promo could have helped a little I guess, but we're still talking about a very Gaga-hostile medium, so there's not much besides a high budget MV and a TV performance.

Venus #76

After that, there wouldn't be anymore singles, but if you really wanna know

MANiCURE N/A

Applause N/A

Stans in general need to drop this idea that it was this or that one song that bombed and that if only their fav was released instead things would be all dandy. Flopping is a complex process. If anything, Gaga managed to get like 5 hits that would normally never be popular, because of her hype pre-ARTPOP. :reductive:

Listen, I love ARTPOP but changing the single choices wouldn't have done a thing for the era since the big problems were everything outside of the music. Unless she released like JND as the lead, it always would have done at least decently well based off of hype and the others would have flopped. The only thing that could have changed would be not releasing DWUW as a single and potentially avoiding that fiasco.

holy scheisse

I like to think of ARTPOP as our own sacred Gaga album that belongs to us and not the gp. And that is how I cope with it's "underperformance" :vegas:

Anyway I think gypsy could've been promising, it's very TEOG, the other singles not so much. Applause did well, do what u want could've done better if it was less problematic (and remains one of my fav songs). But also remember the context Gaga was so overexposed and the wave of Adele, Lana del Rey, Lorde, anti popstars was taking over the zeitgeist so I think nothing would've really worked to make the era more "successful"
