Construction and Real-estate to accommodate fast growing population creates a lot of jobs and supports industries indirectly and is an unusually high percentage of economic output compared to most Nations. Many jobs behind the scenes also depend on helping to settle new commers In addition Canada has also prefered to use immigration to deal with ageing population and retiring workforce instead of raiding retirement age like many Nations have come. If you’re trying to move without having a job offer lined up, there’s a list of qualifications to get immigration points and you have to have a certain number to apply. It sounds like the first one but I don’t want to get my hopes up I think it's a bit of everything There's far fewer flights coming at all making it hard for people to travel When people come from abroad there's a 2 week mandatory quarantine that must be controlled The Government agencies in general may be more backlogged There's fewer job offers at the moment with with shutdowns and some people can sometimes come faster with a job offer I don't know which are the main reasons but it's probably a combination of everything. Something like 49% of Toronto's population for example was born outside of Canada I know the USA with 9X the population only had like 3X the immigration. So in a proportional basis only 1/3 the rate I read an article before as well about projections of how Canada will be 80% POC by century end and only 20% white by century end because of high immigration rates and the majority of immigrants aren't white But economically speaking it definitely has created a dependency. For example construction has been 6% to 8% of GDP per year and a normal developed Country is usually 2% to 4%. And. The reason it's so high is because fast population growth means lots of construction needed Besides construction a lot of jobs are supported in finance, realestate brokerage, childcare for immigrants that often start families after moving, immigration settling services etc If our economy was to suddenly have flat population growth line Europe or even a lower immigration rate (relative to population) like the US we'd struggle cuz the economy has evolved to be dependent on this consistent influx and now it needs it Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

I only have a very superficial idea so I'm not the best person to ask When my family immigrated to Canada it was different times. My mom's side of the family was simply sponsored by an aunt. Then when my parents temporarily moved back to Portugual my mom already had citizenship and I had it too cuz I was born in Canada so coming back was easy even for my dad who had only been a permanent resident but never a citizen Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...
