I know the convention isn't the place to announce policies, but I really wanted to hear what policies they will put forward other than "Im not Trump."

The main clip of Obama's speech tonight that everyone is going to see is his scathing rebuke of Trump. While everything he said is painfully true and stated more eloquently by him than anyone else could...the most important part of his speech was this:

"Look, I understand why many Americans are down on government. The way the rules have been set up and abused in Congress make it easy for special interests to stop progress. Believe me, I know. I understand why a white factory worker who's seen his wages cut or his job shipped overseas might feel like the government no longer looks out for him, and why a Black mother might feel like it never looked out for her at all. I understand why a new immigrant might look around this country and wonder whether there's still a place for him here; why a young person might look at politics right now, the circus of it all, the meanness and the lies and crazy conspiracy theories and think, what's the point?

Well, here's the point: this president and those in power -- those who benefit from keeping things the way they are -- they are counting on your cynicism. They know they can't win you over with their policies. So they're hoping to make it as hard as possible for you to vote, and to convince you that your vote doesn't matter. That's how they win. That's how they get to keep making decisions that affect your life, and the lives of the people you love. That's how the economy will keep getting skewed to the wealthy and well-connected, how our health systems will let more people fall through the cracks. That's how a democracy withers, until it's no democracy at all."

obama had suuuch a good speech, just wow. you should include the part where he goes a little in depth on the history in this country, how it started off ****en absolutely horrible and got less horrible over time because of the people and activists who fought for the rights we now sometimes take for granted. how at one time or another, all women, or all african americans were barred from casting a vote, period; how the country was founded with white men who owned property being the only people in the country allowed to vote; that if anyone should be cynical about a broken system, it should be the people of that past who fought to change all that for us now, that they knew the importance of voting, even when the system was so, SO skewed against them, so much more so than it is now for a lot of people, and yet they fought for it. they weren't all "what's the point when the whole system is bad?" they fought to make it better, and their efforts didn't yield perfect results, but it did move the line. and that's the point: if you know even a little bit of political history in the USA, you know that change always comes in steps, it never leaps into perfect. just because you don't get everything you want doesn't mean you be a big baby, you help move the line a little, because some progress is better than no progress, or worse, painful regression (like we're seeing now under trump). 

so far, obama and sanders had the best speeches of everyone in my opinion, because they drove the central issue regarding both republicans and trump: that they are attacking democracy itself. all the bad policy aside, the allowing of election interference, the lying about reality, the attacks on the free press, and the attacks on facts to the point where people are living in different realities and can't even agree on what's real . i mean michelle obama put the obvious out there in plain english: if you don't think things could get any worse than they are now... they can. 

and before anyone @'s me, biden wasn't my first choice. in fact he was one of my last. but he is A LOT better than trump. even if he does nothing but fortify the democracy, that would be a HUGE plus. believe it or not, the reality is that we're sliding slowly but surely into something so not democratic with trump--call it authoritarianism, call it fascism--whatever... it's just very, very bad. i mean, he did, only last week, try to **** up the postal service to suppress the vote.

That's not really true. Its just that the Dems don't want to say they don't have a good platform and instead would rather appeal to platitudes instead. 

 

I hate Hillary but hers was the best affirmative speech for Joe and then Warren. Kamala and Obama s were less than desirable.
