Katy about Smile: “I wrote the title track from the album when I was coming through one of the darkest periods of my life and had lost my smile. This whole album is my journey towards the light – with stories of resilience, hope, and love.” (Both these quotes are from Genius) I think theme wise Katy’s is better, it has a stronger sense of symbolism with the clown theme. Meanwhile Britney’s is a bit watered down to me, at least how she puts it. But I prefer Circus as a song over smile, just based off production and melody.
