What Made Gaga Most Depressed During ARTPOP?

I think the biggest factor was her breakup with Luc.

He was the love of her life, and many of her love songs through BTW were written about him. I believe he cheated on her a few times, was gambling enormous amounts of her money, and Gaga finally had enough. He also used to berate her and put down her music and style both before and after she was famous. The scene from ASIB where Jackson berates Ally in the tub was almost literally quotes from what Luc said to her throughout her life.

The breakup during the BTW tour drove her into depression where she used drugs and alcohol to cope, along with being overworked by Troy for the past 3 years, eventually leading to the hip injury.

The breakup, injury, and cancellation of BTW Ball during the peak of her career was like having all your success and happiness taken from you overnight.

ARTPOP was supposed to be her comeback, but she wasn't ready mentally or physically. The pressure from Troy (and probably others) to launch ARTPOP when she wasn't ready was the final straw. But, she couldn't stop the release of ARTPOP since everything was set and Applause was already released.

So she had to do her best to save face, promote the album, and tour while being neither mentally or physically ready. Couple that with the fact that she received extreme criticism from press, celebs, and fans for ARTPOP, it only made her feel even worse.

All of this combined and public is a huge recipe for disaster and major depression, as we've seen her go through.

I think it was the comedown from 2008-2012, what you got to remember was she became famous overnight. She went from playing small bars to huge arenas, i don't think she had the time process it properly. During 2009-2011 she was called the biggest star in the world and her career was unbreakable, but her label just exploited her to the max and used her as a cash cow and people constantly called her overexposed.

I think it had really got to Gaga that people just wanted her to fail and be over when she was just wanting to do what made her/her fans happy. Looking back now I'm sure she's glad it happened as she's mentioned it taught her a lot and really helped her career in the long haul.

Look at her now, she is the worlds biggest star and is untouchable and is celebrated for being one of the trailblazers of music and life.
