It's ok. But the thing is India itself has countless regional cultures which may seem too odd to be parts of a single country. But I think those Indians who are trained in Classical singing won't use this filter in a funny way...

Imagine the absolute most unproblematic person you can envision. Biological food, vegan, boycotts almost all companies, and spends all time reading up on and protesting against all forms of discrimination and social injustice, and still manages to find the time to argue over a barely used Tiktok filter.

Now realize that this is not realistic. Pick your battles. You can spend another hour arguing against a Tiktok filter, or you can spend an hour spreading information and companies to boycott with regards to issues like the Uyghur genocide. There are degrees in which something is problematic. If this is slightly problematic, e.g. a 1 out of 10 in terms of how problematic it is, can't we just decide to ignore it for now, and maybe come back to it when the biggest problems are solved?

I'm not saying that we can't pay attention to individual and small things - if your friend makes a racist joke, call him out. But the reality is that virtually all attention is going to the small and individual things, almost like a type of amusement, while the biggest problems that leave the biggest scars are ignored. That's not how we make a change. Are Indians who saw this and managed to see something offensive in it really going to remember it a week from now? Because I think minorities within India will surely remember the institutionalization of xenophobia and racism under the Modi administration. I wonder if a thread about that would get six pages. And I think that Uighurs, before they go extinct due to abortions and infertility forced upon them by the Chinese government, will definitely remember that nobody did anything to actually change the situation.

TWICE on hatius

As soon as an aspect of BIPOC’s culture is inappropriately made fun of, that comedic moment is the only thing we would be associated to.

(also, were a lot of racist jokes in the past deemed as “norms” in your demographic. )

That’s the difference.

Some of y’all need to understand although internet can be harsh to your problematic behaviors, most of the time, you don’t have to deal with BS BIPOC having to deal with in real life. Y’all have privilege to actually listen to people attached to specific culture voicing their opinion and educate y’all. Make use of that.

Please ignore the spelling in username. I am a Beyonce stan afterall.

Also, one thing less evil is still ****ing evil. Bringing “oh no this is not significant as xyz” is irrelevant to conversation.

Then reflect it in your comment.

I was halfway writing a point by point respond to your comment when I realized you already set your mind that I am ignorant on the matter and most likely won't accept my view, and that I don't really care enough to convince you otherwise. So I genuinely wish goodluck trying get your point across.

Seven pages in and I still can’t figure out if wind blowing in your face is a form of “Desi Face” or if the lip syncing to an Indian woman is the problem here (in which case, drag queens are going to be in TROUBLE if lip syncing is going to be considered racist soon).

Well, why you have to use classical Indian songs to mock yourself? Why he can't use his own cultural songs? Stick with your own culture.

Chile they’re white and they won’t realize that just because they’ve never heard of how this can be offensive it still doesn’t mean it’s not offensive.

James Charles darker shade is more disrespectful than the filter itself imo.

He tanned. It’s natural.

All of the toxic responses here!

Saying “y’all r too sensitive these days” is NOT A VALID RESPONSE OR EXCUSE TO JUSTIFY THE PROBLEM.

the filter clearly triggered some people.  Maybe it didn’t trigger you, but you cannot tell someone they are overreacting when cultural appropriation is being questioned.

Not really. Some Indians feel that a certain tiktok meme might be borderline racist and is making a caricature of Indian Classical music.

On the other hand, you have people from other nationalities and ethnicities telling them or rather policing them how they should feel about it.

Quite simple.

THIIISSSS

bless your soul for this comment

Do people really need to have it pointed out that the bit that is being mocked is the filter, not the song...

This is why the left is doomed - instead of addressing things like climate change and oppressive economic systems, they're wasting time on beauty gurus and their background song selection - yeah, I'm sure THAT is the straw that will break the camel's back and lead to the second holocaust...

It's a joke! When you give me that look, it's a joke!
