FentyGa 14,340
i’m just wondering, because it feels like everything’s been done. so, what could a popstar do to be controversial? regardless of whether they’re right or wrong. i think it would be pretty controversial if someone did an album called “The Communist Innuendo” (as a play on the communist manifesto), with sexualised pro-communist songs

DC 25,164
That's what you want to think because we've seen Gaga make some of the craziest controversies in the pop music scene, I'm saying some because Madonna exists. BUT! Anything can be controversial, if it's cool and wacky enough to get people's attention like the simple yet very interesting music video for Sia's song Chandelier

Mirrion Rizzons 11,060
I guess the next thing that would still be boundary pushing would be a gay, eccentric male superstar who fully embraces LGBTQ+ issues - this is still kinda taboo in the mainstream imo gays x religion - imagine the bloodbath

I mean, if a current pop girl did half of what Madonna did back in the 90s, it would still be shaking the industry.

HoneyB 27,926
There are different ways of being controversial, you can just be problematic by being and promoting racism/homophobia/sexism through your art. You can also be controversial for your imagery, think to what Madonna did with Erotica, we never saw a female artist so freely express and encourage sexuality and sensuality in such a way. The possibilities are endless, especially now with the internet at our disposal we have a lot of people looking for the next person to “cancel” for the slightest of things. Madonna and Gaga were technically controversial for their outright support of the LGBTQ+, and even Beyoncé during her Lemonade era was boycotted for supporting and expressing BLM imagery and statements. It really depends on what the artist is seeking to do to be “controversial”, It’s either to seek attention through being dumb/problematic, or by wanting to express a message in their art that isn't usually discussed thus making them a polarized topic of discussion. 💋 𝕊𝕥𝕖𝕡 𝕐𝕒 ℂ𝕠𝕠𝕜𝕚𝕖𝕤 𝕌𝕡💋🍪
