Did Gaga pigeonhole herself this decade?

Did Gaga pigeonhole herself the last decade to only appeal to a specific demographic: LGBTQ community? So much so that she is seen as uncool, at least in the US?

Will she always have poor callouts on radio simply because anything by her will be flagged as "Gaga" and "uncool"?

If true, is there anything she can do about it? Or is she a (very big) niche artist and is happy with that?

Born in Chromatica

I mean she has had no.1 hits in the past two years in America, so she is cool to many people I would think. So, I wouldn’t’t say she is uncool.

I think she’s trying to cater to all audiences, that’s the reason she did jazz and Joanne/ASIB. And now she’s back to dance pop, for now that is.

You think the LGBT community wanted Joanne? :laughga:

Oh great, more Joanne bashing, how original :interestinga:

I have to say, much as I love her for a while I did find it hard to relate to her because she catered to a very specific demographic, namely young gay males, especially during the BTW era. But I think the GP is still here for her, her appeal seems much more broader than it used to be.

I didn't bash Joanne.

I answered the question in the OP in relation to whether or not she catered to a gay audience.

Joanne is not an album which inherently targets a gay audience en masse.

No because she appealed to straight women and soccer moms during the Joanne, C2C and ASIB eras. I think she would have been pigeonholed if she hadn't turned it around with the year of amazing performances starting with the sound of music tribute.

Not really, she has always been a very "gay" artist, even from the start, the fact that someone who was so different was able to make it to be the biggest popstar in the world is remarkable. The way you make it sound like she decided one day to focus on the gay community when in reality she has always been about the gay community, the fame was gay dance club beats when the whole music industry was about hip hop. You could even argue that her earlier work from the fame era was even more gayer than born this way.  There was a brief period she became uncool but i feel like most people nowadays respect her because of her talent, even if someone is a hater they will still appreciate her for what a great singer she is and how versatile she has proven to be through the years

I think the reason she’s seen as “uncool” is just that she was very polarizing in the beginning, so people have strong opinions about her. It’s gotten a lot better, but that’s always going to follow her to some extent

and it’s not just gay stuff, some people will always see her as the freak in the meat dress, or the rah rah bitch, etc. She’ll always be “weird” to some people

reality’s tight if the music is right

I agree her music has always been "gay", but during TF/TFM she was seen as cool inspite of all that. I don't think that's been true for most of the last decade though.

I don't know about that. I think the GP loved Gaga during the Superbowl because everyone watched and it was a fairly safe and satisfying set that was executed well. And of course during ASIB had a bunch of 20+ straight women stanning her character/love story.

I don't think Joanne and Chromatica clicked with the GP at all.

:lolly: She was never uncool, the GP just has shifting, basic, taste.

To be frank, GP-friendly/mainstreamGa is my only disliked iteration of her art.

He's not bashing Joanne, just reporting the fact that many fans do
