Has 2020 slayed you musically?

Fetch the Bolt Cutters, Miss Anthropocene and Chromatica (even though I expected way more) are the only ones to have slayed me. We need someone to launch us into a new direction, cause it's getting stale and the critics seem to rave about the bare minimum

I like dancin', and ponies....

Chromatica is one of Gaga's best albums, and Folklore is Taylor at her best, too.

They are my two favourite artists, so for those two records alone, 2020 has been pretty epic on a musical note.

I also really enjoyed Future Nostalgia and watching the rise of Dua Lipa, too, who, imo, is one of the best 'new' pop stars for many, many years.

And there's still a Katy record to come, as you say, which should be interesting if nothing else.

Gaga, Taylor, Katy... all in one year. It's pretty cool.

Oh, and don't forget Adele in December, most likely.

Ive never been more uninteressed in music.

There are some good releases and some very professional works. There are some passiomate that lack technical aspect. But overall its just not exciting enough for me.

Jk :billie:

But it's hard for me to understand cause there were so many different genres and artists this year so if this year isnt great then idk if you'll ever have a great music year again :awkney:

I'm sure there is great music out there but I'm talking in general based on what I've heard. I like a few releases but I don't listen to much new music anymore because I've been consistently unimpressed with a lot of it since around 2010, bar a few highlights. Music isn't what it used to be for me and I've lost interest. I'm no longer a music fan, I'm just a fan of the few artists from the period when I found it good. So I'm not going to be aware of all of it and I don't care enough to seek it out either. I'm fine with that. And if you think the quality hasn't changed then that's good.

but if you dont really seek out a lot of releases dont you think it's a bit unfair to judge?

For me the ultimate revelation for 2020  was Grimes and the first time I listened to her was with Miss Anthropocene.

Same for me. MA would be my third favourite album behind Gaga and Halsey, but I already loved those two before.

OT idk what to say 2020 is an odd year in every aspect and music was going to be no exception.

There have been some really good albums but I only loved three new releases. There have been a lot of disappointments too, and most of the new music Ive listened to has left me pretty unimpressed (which is nothing exclusive for 2020 but i would say this year there were more).

Personally, I havent discovered or gotten into a lot of new artists and new music, old and new, compared to last year.

And the fact the first months of the year were dominated by songs released late 2019 makes it even odder.

Hmm...

I really love Chromatica:firega: and I had a very good time with FN for a few weeks. I am excited for Kylie and I started to explore Rina Sawayama.

The rest, idk.

Not really lol. Unfair to who? It's not a personal attack and don't get me wrong, I'm not saying the music is bad, it's just that a lot of it been consistently underwhelming for me over the course of several years. That's a lot of music. So I think I can judge based on what I've heard. I don't think I need to actively seek out all releases to comment. It's not like I've only heard Chromatica and I'm not judging albums I haven't listened to, it's a comment on how I perceive the general music scene these days.

Chromatica alone is the reason why 2020 has slayed musically. 2019 was disappointing... apart from Lover, I don't remember any other albums that stood out.

I agree with @dynamite that the past few years have been pretty meh musically. But 2020 seems to have albums/songs for everyone. And its not just run-of-the-mill albums... the albums that have been put out have been praised in high regard, and they seem to be at a really high level - something which has been lacking for many years.

You have your basic pop albums like Rare, you have your basic disco influenced albums like Future Nostalgia, you have your dancefloor heavy superstar of an album like Chromatica, you have your alternative albums which have their market, Taylor Swift even went back to her roots to give a relaxing smooth folk album, The Weekend came through to give us an 80s inspired album which was epic... it just seems like this year has been pretty good musically.

And thats not all... Katy Perry is releasing in a few weeks, and others like Adele are rumoured to be releasing.

Chromatica definitely seems to have taken the year from good to epic. Its the best album of the year, and with many others to come, 2020 is shaping up to be one of the best years in music in a long time

Yes, I started to expand my musical horizons this year and I have discovered so much amazing music.

Totally  . I Disagree, Blinding Lights, SAWAYAMA and Chromatica are masterpieces. And even artists I usually do not listen to put out music I actually enjoy. I hope the second half of the year can keep up in terms of making this terrible year in general at least somehow endurable :fatcat: .

Ew, David!
