So the album is a definition of basic?

Basic? :bradley:

This is anything but 'basic' - you might not like it if you're strictly into pop music, but it's an extremely complex album lyrically and conceptually. It's almost too intricate in some places, but it's a very mature and sophisticated piece of work.

It's nothing like any of Taylor's previous albums - especially not 1989, Reputation or Lover.

It's probably closest to Safe and Sound, I'd say, but even that is more 'accessible' than folklore, imo,  which is lyrically in a very different lane. It's kind of like reading a book, but not really knowing what's going on. It's quite confusing, I guess, until you get your head around how she's telling stories from the perspective of other people, whilst intertwining it with her own story.

It's very interesting. It shakes up her discography, that's for sure.

I’ve listened to it 3 times now, and it’s so beautiful! This is some of her best writing to date and her voice is so soothing.

I agree with some people that you have to be in a certain mood for it, but you have to be in a certain mood for every type of music.

It’s so calming and right now I just want to sit on an empty cloudy beach, look up to the sky, and stream:vegas:

Half way through and I can't deny that it's a really lovely album so far. Cardigan and August are my faves so far.

It's nice to have such an acoustic output from her definitely but after the title, artwork and other bits of theming came out yesterday, I was expecting something a little more out there if you get me. Like quite acoustic like it is, but a bit creepier and trippy in places would have been nice with a bigger focus on folk and like some ambient/synthy elements involved. Hoping the second half brings some of this in a bit

some peoples' definition of basic is really questionable to me. its as if a song is more singer/songwriter, it's written off as boring and basic just because it doesn't make them want to dance. I think on pop forums that is magnified a lot. I get that it's not everyone's sweet tea in the summer, but to write it off as boring or basic it becomes pretty clear that the lyrical content in what you look for in music takes backseat to the production of it - which is totally fine, not judging! but like, recognize that instead of labeling it as 'basic' because these lyrics are not basic... our girl went Moira Rose on us on some of these tracks and the storytelling and emotional influence is astounding.

Can someone pitch this album to me? I can recognize Swift is a great songwriter (though has had some...questionable past few albums), but I've yet to really enjoy her albums especially the most recent ones (Red onwards). What's the general vibe, musically? I like basically any genre of music so I'm not out here looking for bangers or anything in order for it to be "quality".

For those who don't listen to solely pop, is the album similar to any other music (present or past)? Basically, if you could, tell me what this album's about because I'm a little cramped for time today and want to give it a listen if it warrants it.

if your definition of good music is songs that are bangers, then you're not going to like this album. if you go into this album expecting an album being played at a cafe shop and you're staring out the window or sitting on a beach reading Nicholas Sparks but like really enjoying it or sitting at a fireplace in a log cabin in the fall, then this album is for you.

Nicholas Sparks is a homophobe we shouldn't claim him :bear:

This album is most similar to Red or Speak Now maybe from her own catalogue. You can clearly feel that she collaborated with the National for this album as it has their vibe. I would say it is somewhat similar to Lana's Norman ****ing Rockwell (except more hopeful). Some of the moments remind me of Acoustic versions for Death By A Thousand Cuts or Cornelia Street.

In general this is a singer-songwriter album where there are no bangerz (but there are some songs with more pep in their step).

So far Exile is my favorite. Not at album I'd listen to very much, but it seems good.

Basic just means they don't like it regardless if it's a dance song or a calmer song

Stupid love was released everybody said it's basic

I only said the definition of basic to the description you gave to me “An album to listen to while sitting in a coffee shop reading Nicholas Sparks”. By any means i labeled the ALBUM basic.

the album is beautiful, calm, peaceful, alternative, Taylor Swift and her talent, naked, boring if you prefer pop/mainstream music you hear on the radio a hundred times a day. This album is stunning and beautiful and it's one of her better albums
