Breaking: GOP considering extending unemployment benefit at reduced level

I’ve been unemployed since March and no chance of going back to work anytime soon... it’s been nice getting a steady $900 every week. But man does it go quick when it comes to bills. I’ve cut back severely on expenses and don’t do a thing... I would now be losing $500 in my weekly income and gonna have to start figuring out which bills are important which ones aren’t.

Wow, what a joke! At first I thought that meant dropped to 400 a week. Now I realize it’s 100 a week. 
 

I’m a server. I’ve been working since this had started but only about 3 days a week. I’ve been fortunate to work at a restaurant that remained open for take out. But we are currently still not able to serve people so there will be no shifts for all the employees that are going to need to work. I’ve been very grateful for the extra unemployment money because my pay has been about a third of what it would normally be. But now this won’t even touch it. Looks like I’ll be getting a second job! 
 

It’s sucks for people who are in industries that just can’t open back up. We can’t just go get another job, it’s not always that easy. I was hopeful we wouldn’t get screwed over this hard.

It goes both ways. My husband was making 200k/year and was laid off at the beginning of Covid. The 1100/week he's getting now is not even close to what he was making before. We had to sell belongings to be able to afford bills.

This is extreme, and I hope this version of the reduction doesn’t get passed,  but unemployment does have to be reduced, or at least amended to be more exclusive. The incentive to work is so low in the US rn because unemployment keeps getting better and better. 

There is a surplus of jobs in a lot of sectors right now, but it’s lower wage jobs so people who would usually apply for them are going on unemployment instead. It’s a f*cking mess.

I totally agree. Things aren’t good on both sides  at the end of the day I’m just happy I still have a job, and I’m so glad that I’m able to interact with people at work because the isolation would drive me bonkers

We had to do the same. My husband didn't lose his job but he only makes like 22K per year whereas I make 60K. I was the one who got laid off and it was terrible. And (hi hi im from florida) then because of a stupid error my unemployment wasn't approved until 04/26 even though I was furloughed on 03/20. I've still not received a reversed decision on the effective date of my claim. And I went back to work on May 25th. So I got like 3 week of unemployment since March and didn't start getting paid again until May 29th and that was only for 4 days. 

 

Needless to say the 600 a week was very helpful but only for like the 3 weeks I actually received it.

Yeah this whole situation was handled so terribly..  

I feel like rent/mortgage payments should have been suspended for a 3 month time frame where the country had a REAL shutdown so we could flatten the curve but instead each state was following it's own regulations and started opening up early so now we're worse off than we started. Honestly such a MESS

I believe this is in addition to unemployment they are getting from their state.

For instance, in my state the maximum unemployment per person is 1,100...so it would be living on 1,500 a month for a single person. They would also be eligible for rent assistance, help with electricity bills, Medicaid, Food banks, etc.

Not great, but it’s not just 400 dollars a month.

They are still getting unemployment from their state.The 400 is not all the unemployed are receiving. 

This is a drastic cut. They should purpose a more realistic cut.

I think Nickolas misspoke. It’s $1500 every two weeks, so half that. $3000 a month. My husband, a very successful gig worker (yoga) has been getting the same.

i hope and pray something gets figured out soon. I was expecting a deduction to $300-$400/wk plus unemployment, to deduct $500 is just too much.

Trump really bungled the **** out of this. Had the country simply FULLY shut down for six weeks, and the CARES act been put into place as it was implemented, we’d be in such a different place. But the middling, pass-the-blame to the states decisions that have been made have made a bad problem far, far worse.

How anyone ever believed this place is great is beyond me. Things might look great from afar, but it's a miserable place to exist
