Bodycam Footage of Floyd Arrest Released

Bodycam footage of George Floyd’s arrest in Minneapolis has been released, and shows Floyd’s initial detention for the first time. Derek Chauvin, the officer who kneeled on Floyd’s neck for almost 8 minutes and was subsequently charged with murder, is not seen in the first few few minutes of the footage. 
 

The video starts with former officers J Alexander Keung and Thomas Lane arriving at the convenience store and being directed to a parked truck across the street by the store manager. Thomas Lane goes over to the truck and tells Floyd to put his hands up. The footage appears to show Floyd moving around inside the vehicle and Lane then pulls his gun out, leading to Floyd asserting that he was shot by another officer at some point in time (the incident in question is not clear.) 
 

Floyd then exits the vehicle in handcuffs and the officers sit him against the wall while interviewing witnesses. After a few moments, the officers return and attempt to place Floyd in the back of a squad car. He complains that he had COVID-19 and is claustrophobic, while refusing to enter the car; after a brief verbal interaction with a stranger on the street, Floyd is put into the car by the two Keung and Lane. He struggles a little and tells the officers he’s having trouble breathing (this is the first use of “I can’t breathe”.) He also offers to put himself on the ground instead of the car, but the officers appear to ignore this offer. 
 

The next series of events is when the interaction changes from mostly routine into something very different. The bodycam angle doesn’t offer a full view of it, but Floyd is either removed from or slides out of the backseat. Immediately after, Chauvin arrives and presses his knee into the neck of Floyd. Audio, consistent with bystander-shot video that circulated in May, picks up Officer Lane’s repeated question/suggestion that Floyd be repositioned- and Chauvin’s answers in the negative. 
 

Next, Officer Keung searches for a pulse but “can’t find one.” EMTs arrive to the scene and wheel an unresponsive Floyd off on a stretcher; Officer Lane follows and performs a series of chest compressions in the ambulance, before the medics take over. 
 

Chauvin’s body camera, knocked loose during his restraint of Floyd, is scooped out from under the squad car by Officer Keung. The video concludes with Keung looking for an evidence bag to place the $20 counterfeit bill that Floyd was accused of passing into and with Officer Chauvin providing one.
