At the entrance of the Archimedes Museum, in the center of Ancient Olympia, is exhibited, reconstructed in natural size, in its first world appearance, the Earth Globe of the State from Mallo, Cilicia. This is the first rational "discovery" in the history of mankind of North & South America and Australia, dating to the 2nd century. e.g.

Archimedes, Greek Stoic philosopher and grammarian, based on accurate measurement of Earth's circumference and the excellent mapping of Eratosthenes and the great explorer Pytheas of Massalians, who managed to get to the North Arctic Circle, and other Greek geographers, constructed with the help of spherical coordinates a globe , at least 2 meters in diameter , presented in Pergamon around the year 150 BC.

The globe was divided into five parallel zones, two polar, two temperate and one hot, a division which we still use today. The polar zones, due to the extreme cold, as well as Ecuador due to the extreme heat, were unfavorable for the development of human life. Also, the climatic seasons in the northern hemisphere were opposite to those in the southern.

I assume they believed there must be continents in the Southern Emisphere because the Globe needs to be symmetric in terms of lands. This is basically a cultural reason since Greeks valued symmetry a lot.

Ancient Greeks were so ahead of their time, they had even predicted GAGA's success! :oprah::koons:
