I looked up her chart history and turns out she doesn’t have a hit. What made her a name in the industry

The Guide to Getting into Grace Jones  (Noisey/VICE)

They break down the "Queen of the Gay Discos" prolific and diverse 50 Year career across pop culture. Including several Apple and Spotify playlists: So you want to get into: 70s Disco, Gay Club Grace Jones? ...New Wave Reggae Grace Jones? ...Accessible Art-Pop Icon Grace Jones? ...Back-to-Her-Roots Grace Jones?

Gaga stans for a reason. Get into huh!

Even though Grace Jones is considered an icon—and she is iconic, with her androgynous aesthetic, boundary-pushing musicality and 50-year career—her discography isn’t as well known as other artists of her caliber. Her name might conjure up the radical visual collaborations between herself and Jean-Paul Goude, Andy Warhol or Keith Haring, in which she used her body like bold, abstract paint on a canvas. Or your mind might wander towards her most successful tracks from the mid-80s, like “Slave to the Rhythm,” or “Pull Up to the Bumper.” But mostly, unless you’re a fan, Jones is better recognized for the span of her cultural influence than the intricacies of ten studio albums and 53 singles between 1976 and 2008. Which is a shame, really, because there’s a lot to unpack here, and a lot to fall in love with.

Tbh Grace Jones is more a fashion icon than a musician, or an actress even. She dabbled in a bit of everything, but in the end it's her as a person that made a lasting impression on pop culture.

Wasn’t she one of Andy Warhol’s muses? I think that’s how she initially came into the scene. Even though she doesn’t have a hit, lots of people know who she is regardless.

because she's always grumpy and look snobbish

this is why posh spice was the least successful one MUSICALLY, she was posh and never smiled.

I remember reading once she didn't smile because she used to get really bad canker sores.

This. She's absolutely known more for her fashion & her persona & her association with Andy Warhol than her actual music, at least in the US. Also, never understood why fans were so upset with her being snarky about Gaga because she is snarky about nearly everyone and has been more cruel towards other artists.

I guess fans intrinsically dislike when people don't validate Gaga, or flat-out criticize her. It's made even worse when it comes from figures that mattered in pop culture, because one would assume they have legitimacy to say anything about her. But quite often, those are people whose careers are way behind them and who can't stand seeing a newer artist cut from the same cloth as them achieving success :ohwell: They might be iconic, but they're just old, frustrated and unkind, which is never a good look.

The amount of disrespect towards Grace Jones in this thread is downright disgusting. :air:

Her music was too alternative and underground to achieve huge mainstream success. She is an incredible and iconic pop culture figure. Her androgyny, her fashion, she was experimental yet instantly recognizable. She deserves more recognition and acclaim tbh.

Gay classics weren't always HITS. Before the streaming and itunes age the charts were dominated by safe and radio friendly music **exclusively**

Sure, but Slave to the Rhythm and La Vie en Rose actually were big hits in my country at the time. Guess it's not the same all over the globe.

According to Gaga I'm a ****ing rad bitch
