Chromatica not edgy enough?

Gaga has been very open and honest about wanting to reach as massive an audience as possible. She's been like this ever since Uptown Funk dominated the charts for a summer. That's why she scrapped the original LG5 and worked with Ronson on Joanne/ASIB. She legit thought A-yo was that song, but of course that didn't pan out, so she's leaned even further into family-friendly radio bangers with Chromatica (her first non-explicit album!), going so far as to work with Max Martin. That's why SL was the lead. She thought it was a guaranteed smash.

i actually think A-yo is really GP friendly. but they didn't left room for the song. :poot:

That's what makes it different from her other records

We would never expect her to make a "mainstream" toned-down pop album but there she is

and even Babylon and 911 are so much her

I actually think the album is perfect. I understand how some feel it lacks the edge we expect from Gaga but I think it's because we hold her to a high standard. Sometimes less is more and I think she's taken that approach this time. Instead of making it weird for the sake of being weird she's just focused on making a solid pop album. I think she didn't want to have an amalgamation of different themes and ideas that made it a non-cohesive mess that nobody understands like ARTPOP and it's era.

When you actually think of each individual song and if they could play on the radio like Alice and Replay for example, you realise that she hasn't really played it safe. These are still unique pop songs that nobody else would release and they are interesting because they have a meaning and aren't just to be taken at face value. I think fans always expect her to come up with something new and create a new genre but she just simply wanted to make music that she could dance to and distract herself from the pain. When you think of it like that she didn't need to make it more extravagant, it serves it's purpose.

I agree that Chromatica lacks the edginess that Gaga usually puts in her craft. But your opinion just gave me a different view of Gaga and the album. Thanks

I have to agree. It's made even more confusing by the album cover that doesn't really represent the overall feel of the music imo - one would expect something much edgier, grittier, darker, which the album delivers in small touches, but not as a whole.

It's something that I experienced at the beginning of her career as well: I felt like there was a disconnect between her outrageous public persona and her Fame days music that seemed pretty tame in comparison, and I felt like the music and the visuals finally met and matched with TFM. I respect her vision tho, and still very much enjoy this record. But let's be honest, she was hungry for a smash here and wasn't that interested in making something incredibly experimental and polarizing.

But yay, maybe they should have let SOPHIE or A.G. Cook tweak some stuff here and there  Like, I find myself going back and forth between Chromatica and How I'm Feeling Now at the moment and I'm not gonna lie, while Chromatica is my favorite of the two, How I'm Feeling Now feels much more innovative and like how I envision the future of pop. But props to Gaga for making her own thing and not succumbing to something that's becoming some sort of a trend.

While Chromatica isn't exactly my favorite album ever made, the criticism that it's not "edgy" enough isn't valid, it's more about a lack of variety in its sound than some imaginary "edginess" that it lacks.

Actually I really enjoy how coherent the album is, making it very difficult not to listen to it fully and in order.

Yeah Bloodpawp is a mess for that dated and safe production. Free Woman sounds so basic :fail:

The 90s house sound she was going for could have probably been handled better by other producers as well. Bloodpop and company did a pretty good job though.

I'd really like her label to give these songs to actual big name DJ/Producers/Remixers that were huge in the 1990's and let them give the songs a remix treatment in that style for some future remix EP's. Some names I'd like to see remix would be:

Master At Work (Louie Vega)

David Morales

Danny Tenaglia

Junior Vasquez

Shep Pettibone

Daft Punk

Sasha

John Digweed

Erick Morillo

Roger Sanchez

Deep Dish

Murk (Oscar G)

Chemical Brothers

Mark Farina

DJ Sneak

Fatboy Slim

X-Press 2

Superchumbo

Junior Sanchez

Josh Wink

I could make a list a mile long but you get the idea.

I WOULD LOVE THIS. Shep is absolutely amazing, his production is pure gold. And Daft Punk are legends too.

Shep hasn't produced music in years. He runs a hotel/nightclub in Jersey I believe. Daft Punk are really picky who they work with. Master At Work who have remixed for Madonna, Michael & Janet and a list of other big names that goes on forever posted they actual remixed the new Dua Lipa single. So once again Dua Lipa is already thinking ahead of the game and using 90's House producers for Hallucinate remixes which is brilliant. Their style totally suits the song.
