Regarding the moderation, I don't see how that would work. I guess parents just need to make sure their kids aren't using things they shouldn't be using, and users need to report predatory behaviour when they see it. I guess parents just need to make sure their kids aren't using things they shouldn't be using, and users need to report predatory behaviour when they see it. sis, have you even used the app? it’s literally gay hell. it’s been overflown by curious straight men and predators. the app is especially dangerous and doesn’t cater towards transgender people at all. i have been stalked MANY times irl from guys i didn’t even interact or reply to on the app, and i never even gave out my location. i’ve been followed home, grabbed and almost dragged into a public bathroom from another man i recognised, and was sexually assaulted from a guy i met up with, had guys showing up to my work (super embarrassing). this all happened within 6 months. i haven’t been on the app since january this year and i’m keeping it that way. it did nothing for me at all and surely a lot of trans/gays who use the app would have nothing nice to say about it also. the worst part about the app is it has ZERO support systems for people who were to possibly be sexually assaulted/raped. it’s because of how discrete the app is, you can delete the app and it’ll have no records whatsoever of who you were or anything. i couldn’t report the man who sexually assaulted me, i tried reaching out to grindr and they said it wasn’t their responsibility basically. not trying to make this a sympathy story but i’m just trying to explain how toxic the app is. the amount of underaged kids who have messaged me on the app is horrifying too. they’ll be like “i’m 16 is that ok” and NO it’s not ok at all. all i could do was convince them to leave the app as it wasn’t a place for kids and it wasn’t what they thought it would be. obviously they never listen, but it’s scary how accessible it even is towards kids. educating them is one thing but they won’t listen to that, it has to be grindr’s responsibly to keep children off that app as well as predators. proper moderation is the only way to achieving this. grindr’s moderation has been messy since the beginning. just look up how many horror stories people have posted online from their experience. also the last thing we honestly should be worrying about is discretion. having profiles that aren’t blank is safer and would make the grindr app a safer place. i understand a lot of closeted guys are on there but the grindr app itself is a discrete app, so only gays would be seeing each other so what’s there to expose? having identification prior to joining would make the app a safer and secure place. those who have a problem with that can choose to either join or not. However I don't understand how any of these things are a result of the Grindr? If you said you didn't give out your location and didn't even interact with these people on the app, then it would seem these attacks were not encouraged/aided/caused by the app in anyway. Regarding the fact that there are curious straight men on it, why shouldn't they be? It's an app aimed at MSM, you don't need to identify as gay to be on it. And as it is primarily aimed at cis MSM yes it caters mostly to them, which I don't think is wrong. But even so there are still options for gender identity/pronouns on profiles and frequent advertisements for information/news about trans issues, so I don't see how it should really cater to trans people any more than that. About the anonymity, unfortunately there aren't just other innocent LGBT people on the app. It has been used many times to find gay people and attack them/murder them, even by governments in certain countries. For some people the only way to use the app safely (and for some it is a very important/only way of meeting other LGBT people/exploring their sexuality) is by remaining anonymous. Plus, having more personal information on it would simply make it easier for predators to identify and track people down, which would surely just make harrassment and attacks more common.
