LORD GAGA 1,271
Nobody with an ounce of integrity calls her that except select pressed Twitter Madge fans or Beyoncé fans mainly because they don’t have anything else to talk about.
ImTired 3,955
Someone so outside the box/norm is bound to ruffle the feathers of people who don't understand it, get it, vibe it, whatever. What people forget is that even during her imperial phase, some people just flat out hated her and denied her for whatever reason. Just don't let it get to you and enjoy the music! But I constantly see people trying to downgrade and discredit Gaga’s success, and they’re always making her seem like a flop. If she’s such a flop/fad then why are they so threatened? I only ever see Gaga being hated on in this way and I genuinely don’t understand. If she isn’t a threat then why do they always act threatened? Gaga’s so nice and loving and they seem to hate that.. 1) Gaga's always been polarizing and was even more so early on in her career, so people who feel strongly about celebs tend to love or hate her. There are other examples when it comes to public figures like Jennifer Lawrence, etc. It's part of the reason she was ripped apart by the R Kelly debacle, more than some of his past collaborators, even though there are people who worked with him far more and at a later date. 2) Stan twitter, or anti-stan twitter, has to be dramatic about everything...so they characterize everything as a "flop" or "smash hit." Also, stan twitter doesn't like to acknowledge that music sales have just decreased in general (Taylor Swift is selling 200-400k less than her commercial peak) and pop is not v. popular nowadays. 3) The BTW Amazon deal back in the day didn't help either—it set unrealistic expectations for Gaga's future sales. 4) The worst of the little monsters on social media do not help. It's unfair, but celebrities often get blamed, associated, or even "subconsciously" sort of associated with social media bullies. There was even an op-ed several years ago, before Bey was kind of seen as untouchable aside from the right wing press, where a person mentioned the Beyhive tempered their appreciation of Beyonce. At least in the US, the general public isn't even that engaged on twitter (I think less than 10% of the population last I read)....but if you are on twitter you are more attuned to "twitter" things (like snarky comments about Gaga) so the dislike may seem more widespread. 5) The Madonna thing. Lots of monsters like to downplay how hugely influential she was back in the day (and still is kind of) or that Gaga was equally at fault for that mess (which I think was a PR stunt that got out of control). She was one of a handful of major stars who embraced the LGBTQ community during the AIDS crises, etc. so a lot of people have general respect for her even if they don't care for her music or her in general..and Gaga came off as kind of a disrespectful, brash, and obnoxious kid to her. However...at the end of the day, most people don't really care one way or the other about artists. They just watch the movies or listen to music, or they don't. Gaga has had decent longevity but her peak was so massive that everything after it feels smaller in comparison. Actually it happened during the Born This Way era. It was because she was constantly slaying, not because of "less successful" material. And I'm sure it developed earlier/ when the Madonna comparisons started. The bigger the star, the bigger the target. She even sarcastically referenced people calling her a "flop" on stage during the BTWB saying stuff like "there's 50,000 people in this stadium, my album is a flop " Kind regards
