She also talked about them and those songs in the Q&A The album was originally supposed to sound more like Birds of Prey but she scrapped that concept (Light & Darkness) so Birds of Prey became a bonus track instead. The electronic sound was already in full force in pop music, M.I.A., Sia, Le Tigre, Ladytron and Peaches were all pretty much established indie artists. Nicki Minaj was also known as the upcoming new hot thing in rap music. To me there are some very clear highlights on that album, Bionic, Elastic Love, Lift Me Up, You Lost Me, Birds Of Prey and Monday Morning are all great songs. But the rest falls flat for me. Back then I used to love this album but listening back the songs don't hold up, sorry. Specially when Stripped and Back to Basics are pretty much timeless. It’s all about perspective imo. The album is not ahead of it’s time or experimental in general. But it’s definitely both or those things in the mainstream pop scene. What makes the album ahead of it’s time for me is getting all those amazing indie artists a place on a mainstream pop girl album. Their productions were not something you’d find in most mainstream pop albums. Another thing is that the album was not well received by pop fans and/or critics. But 10 years later it became an iconic pop album for pop fans and will always be remembered. That’s what makes it ahead of it’s time for me too. It’s finally getting appreciated, even though it took a while. Just like ARTPOP suddenly became a fan favorite, when it got a lot of hate in 2013. Definitely. She was always extravagant and always had a strong love for controversial fashion way before Gaga came along. So it’s kinda sad that she was always getting accused or copying Gaga, when I’m 100% she was just being herself.
