AsleepOnTheCeiling 6,158
This might be a bit of a stretch, but hereeeeee we go. We know Gaga wrote the song as a cry for help based on the Spotify Storyline feature and that based on multiple interviews she didn't want to live anymore. The other songs on the album touch on pretty dark topics, but nothing went quite as far as the thought of suicide. I think the fact that for the most part she has kept the song ambiguous and hasn't touched much on its meaning in interviews furthers that idea for me. -The most popular symbolism of doves is marriage. But doves are also used to symbolize death as well (and messages (as in her cry for help)). -Why is the number of doves significant? Doves can carry up to 75g, so 1000 doves could carry 75kg or 165 lbs, the weight of a person. -The line "In life, waiting's just a stupid game" could mean waiting for life to be over, and wishing it was over sooner. -The line "Each time, your love seems to save the day" might mean that when she's thinking about ending her life, she knows she's loved and that loves stops her from going through with it. -"If you love me, then just set me free" could signify that she wants her loved ones to let go of her and allow her to be done. I honestly think it could be a double meaning. I think that the song is about moving past these things and she wants to fly up high in the sense of being well mentally. It seems like a big journey, with the promise of not being perfect yet but continuing to try ("I'm not perfect yet, but I'll keep trying"). Gaga is saying "here's what I went through and how low I felt. I really wanted to just be allowed to end it there and have those people let go of me. But this is me acknowledging that pain and where I'm coming from and I promise that I will continue to go on even if I don't really want to. Because I know I'm loved". I could definitely be wrong and looking too far into these lyrics. With such a seriously deep and dark topic I don't mean to put words in Gaga's mouth, but based on some of her interviews and her past I don't think it's too far of a reach. I hope in ways I'm correctly acknowledging Gaga's pain. And even if I am a bit off or completely wrong, I want this to be a reminder that we don't know the meaning of songs to an artist when we make fun of them on this forum and in the world. iAstroLeo 14,384
It makes perfect sense with how Gaga described her state of mind during the creation of the album.. Never thought of it that way, love the song much more now. Thank you
DeanWinchester 41,390
That's a very dark but possible interpretation. I hope Gaga is okay. I hope anybody with mental health issues find a good anchor Flyin' like a 1000 Doves
elijahfan 25,705
I read somewhere that the song was about her friendship with Bo. I guess it's up for interpretation...
Twitter 14
It’s possible, but I don’t think Gaga would go that dark and not explain the song.
HugoJG 1,093
Well, she herself said that songs could have a lot of interpretations, this one is very accurate but really sad. I'd rather think that it's more about wanting to be free from pain/sadness and fly and live. After all, Chromatica is about accepting pain and keep going.. In it they linked to an Italian interview where she apparently talks about it, but the dub is too loud for me to understand what she's saying (they said around 9:22). Shaney 5,515
I thought doves were symbolism for peace and love? I think the song is quite simple. Having that one person (or having yourself) to lift you up and help you fly because without them, you feel like you’re nothing.

Doves serve as more than one symbol. In Biblical terms they're hope (because of Noah). I think she meant to leave it pretty open, so I don't want to say your interpretation is right or wrong. Talking to yourself and your life. 1000 Doves could very well be talking to yourself begging to stay and wanting to be free. JusKeepBreathin 19,311
It's one of my favorite song but I don't get that vibe at all. However music and interpretation always vary. I can understand that POV. I happen to think she is singing directly to us her little monsters. It's a theme she has carried thought her career on stage. When she has said in concerts that she is like Tinker Bell and needs our applause to stay alive or in the song Applause where she lives for the applause or in the guy video where she literally falls out of the sky with a broken wing. Even DWUW has a similar message. It's just this albums latest version of that message. IMO "Nothing in the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity." -Martin Luther King Jr.
JRCF29 8,181
I think the second line you mentioned "if you love me..." is actually about her fans giving her space. And I'm not talking about fun and respectful petitions I might have made to get her to perform I Like it Rough live everyone knows that some "little monsters" are obsessed with harassing her about music and listening to and spreading leaks, and never being satisfied with anything she does. She's saying if you're a true fan than you wouldn't do that, and if you aren't a true fan then leave her alone Don't Call Me Gaga
