NFRatwell 23,290
With Gaga’s new tweet, lots of us have been discussing the meaning of “all music is black music”. Looking at it now it think it makes more sense that the meaning of that is to say that black artists shouldn’t be forced in “urban” categories, but it’s also sparked many to analyze the history of modern music, and it’s really hard to deny that African and black artists truly have played a large part in modern music. It reminded me of one of my favorite videos about Cumbia music, which explores the history and the evolution of the genre. It really is a great video and highlights the importance of African music, while also noting the influence of Native American and European instruments and culture too. I think it’s important to remember that so many genres have been formed thanks to influences from all over the world and we should be more aware of that. Without African art, the music scene would be completely different- not just in rap and hip-hop categories which black artists are culturally restricted to.
