I could be wrong, but I don’t think Fergie was openly Bi when she won Best Pop Vocal Album. She won in February if 2009, and from what I’ve seen, the first mention of her being bi is May 2009. I s2g I’m not joking I’d like to have these answered 😭 Yes SEX and GENDER are 2 different things: -Sex refers to biological sex (the anatomy of an individual's reproductive system, and secondary sex characteristics which appear during puberty). So male and female. (biologically Sam Smith is male as far as I'm aware, but that's not important) -Gender is personal identification though internal awareness. This is the most important one because for a long time people thought this always aligned or had to align with your biological sex. But actually when it doesn't your are transgender. Then you have non-binary people which fall under the transgender umbrella however they don't identify with a particular gender (Sam Smith is here). The term transsexual has a negative history behind it and is less used now. I personally cross it from my vocabulary. -Sexuality is obviously just what we are attracted to. So a non-binary person may not think of gay/straight/bi the way a binary person would. I think that could be where it differs with a transgendered person. A transgendered woman (has or had male anatomy) could consider herself straight in a relationship with a man. In short Sam Smith, a non-binary person, may not consider themself as a gay at present and it's ok, maybe they do and it's also ok. He just wants to be called a guy, even though everyone who grew up with him knows his background. Transgendered people typically prefer to be referred to as male or female (the gender they identify with). I think they would add the word transgendered when talking specifically about their experience/life or to raise awareness. On a day to day most prefer to be referred as male or female.
