Mississippi City Official Publicly Makes Racist Remarks

(I wasn't sure whether to tag this as society or politics.) 

Columbus, MS is literally just about 25 miles up the road from where I live. There's a confederate monument in front of their courthouse. Yesterday, there was a vote on whether or not to relocate it to a local cemetery. It was voted down 3-2 by board of supervisors (who voted along race lines, I may add -- 3 white, 2 black). 

But that's not the big story. After the vote, one of the supervisors, Harry Sanders, who voted against the relocation of the monument was interviewed by a local newspaper. His comments were so inflammatory, they have now made the statewide news. Here is what he said: 

"We didn't do the Japanese right here in World War II, we put them all ... in a concentration camp and everything and nobody said a damn word about it today. Are the Japanese all upset about that, burning stuff down and all that? No. They've (been) assimilated into the country and they are doing fine. The only ones that are having the problems: Guess who? The African Americans. You know why?

In my opinion, they were slaves. And because of that, they didn't have to go out and earn any money, they didn't have to do anything. Whoever owned them took care of them, fed them, clothed them, worked them. They became dependent, and that dependency is still there. The Democrats right here who depend on the black vote to get elected, they make them dependent on them."

Needless to say, the immediate reactions from his comments were met with disdain. The mayor of Columbus has expressed his disdain of Sanders's comments, and there is a protest planned for his removal from office.

We need to bring this national attention. So many bigots are in government positions in this state, and the more awareness we bring to them, the better we will be equipped to do something about them.

Honestly reading the quote that i quoted above, my mouth was agape. It comes to the point where you think 'He must be trolling' or something. But nope! People proving time and time again how disgusting they are

What's really sad is that because of the Cult of the Lost Cause, there are SO many older white Southerners who actually believe all this. They think that African Americans were well taken care of during slavery and that the Jim Crow laws were just meant to protect African Americans and that people are just attacking conservative white Southerners because they are offended by everything and want to get rid of history. It's so absurd. I'm just glad that the younger generations (for the most part) don't feel that way.

On one hand, it's good that all the racists are exposing themselves.

On the other hand, it's so disappointing to know that these people have been in charge of our government and enacting policies that reflect their beliefs. We have got to start electing younger, more knowledgeable representatives and stop voting for these ancient relics that stopped thinking altogether in the 1950s. So many American politicians are far past the average retirement age, and that's ridiculous. No wonder our country is clinging to the past.
