It's a lack of common sense if you don't suspect something is fishy when a song that peaked at #59 in the US, #37 in the UK, #55 in Japan, and #47 in Germany (biggest music markets) has a video with almost 1 billion views.

It's lack of common sense to assume that Katy's label is buying views for that 3-year-old video when her current lead single is struggling to crack 20M.

YouTube is a complicated platform to measure success. The biggest source of views areĀ suggested videosĀ andĀ playlistingĀ (when talking about playlisting most comes from the ā€œdaily mixesā€).

That said, this platform is much more lean back (in where the users donā€™t necessarily choose what they want to view/listen). BA must have been added algorithmically to a ā€œMixā€ or is being suggested after a popular (or a series of one) current videos.

I fully believe they didn't pay for Bon Appetit or Swish Swish's views. Both videos just went viral because people wanted to see Katy crash and burn (the dislike bars speak for themselves). And controversial videos with high dislikes are more likely to benefit from the YouTube algorithm, because it indicates that this video is something that a user should form their own opinion on, because it IS so controversial.

However, I do believe there was some sort of doctoring for both Never Worn White & Never Really Over. If the Rolling Stone is writing a huge OP'ed about labels being able to manipulate charts by doing a $30,000 investment in YouTube ads, it is actually SILLY to assume that labels were not taking advantage of this.

The difference between NRO and NWW is that NWW was released after the TrueView controversy with that one Indian artist breaking the YouTube record just by placing ads everywhere. Ever since that, ads don't count towards the view counter anymore and YouTube has become increasingly stricter with suspicious views and actually removing them (Katy losing 10M views after a few days, BTS losing 30M views on release day).

It's a lack of common sense to assume that a video can only gain views when buying said views. Ad-supported views, playlisting, etcetera. No one wants to add Daisies' video anywhere cause it's just unappealing.Ā
