Police Reform Possible Before July 4

GOP leadership in the Senate has indicated that there is a chance the chamber takes up police reform before the annual July 4 recess. Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC), the caucus' lone African-American member and the point-man on the party's police brutality legislation, will introduce the bill he has been drafting on Wednesday and presumably negotiations with Minority Leader Schumer (D-NY) will begin from there. Senator John Thune (R-SD) has told The Hill that the party is ready to get to work on passing a bill sooner rather than later "if everything can be pulled together." 

Common ground has appeared in the wake of George Floyd's death, for which former officer Derek Chauvin has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder, on banning police use of chokeholds in most cases and creating a national registry for officer use-of-force complaints. Voters and legislators in both parties are enthusiastic about making some changes to the nation's law enforcement, though the extent of those changes varies as one travels across the political spectrum. 

The news that the Senate could tackle such a landmark piece of legislation in what would be nearly unprecedented short-order comes as President Trump and the White House are expected to unveil an executive order laying out framework to involve more social workers (e.g counselors) in certain types of emergency response among other overhauls crafted with police groups, religious leaders, and family organizations, though White House officials say that such an order does not negate the need for legislative action.

It won't. Police reform is something that's been done before and it still has the same people, requirements, and systems in place. Just with a slightly different organizational structure. If they want real change, they are going to need to fire a lot of current police and go from punitive to restorative actions.

If they don't do anything about "qualified immunity" then it's meaningless. 

The SC also rejected a case about it. One step forward, two steps back.

Qualified immunity means cops can get away with anything as long as they've not been told specifically not to do it.  this means, they just need to find a new way to do something bad every time and they have immunity even if it's illegal otherwise.

Breonna Taylor's murderers are still free. They have not even been charged. They will NOT go to trial. The Louisville government needs to ****ing step up. Please look up and sign the petition and make phone calls for Breonna y'all.

I honestly don't think you can reform the police by creating new laws because we've been doing that since day 1. The whole police culture has to change. As long as cops are "the enemy" it just gets worse. As long as blacks and minorities are "the enemy", it just gets worse. Maybe this is the price of freedom and we just put out fires as we go but that only works to a point. We need an entirely different approach to this cancer on our society.
