HRC Resurfaces to Endorse Rep. Engel

Former Secretary of State and the 2016 Democratic nominee for President Hillary Clinton expressed support for 16-term congressman Eliot Engel on Monday, her first endorsement of the 2020 cycle. "Every step of the way, his number-one priority has always remained the same: delivering for his constituents", said the former First Lady and New York Senator in a statement. The endorsement comes as the establishment, including many pro-Israel Democrats and associated PACs, have rallied around the incumbent as he faces an increasingly serious primary challenge in mere weeks. Jamaal Bowman, a former principal and darling of the progressive wing has secured endorsements from Bernie Sanders and AOC, and in the wake of a hot-mic moment in which Engel seemed to suggest he would have no interest in supporting Black Lives Matter if he was unopposed in the primary has picked up a head of steam as he charges toward election day.

Engel has leaned heavily on his experience and seniority while Bowman's campaign has described his opponent as out-of-touch with his district and criticized him for spending little time there outside of campaigning. The race serves as an interesting microcosm of the larger divide in the Democratic party; Hillary and Bernie are no strangers to taking polar opposite sides when it comes to their vision for the party. If Engel loses the race, he would become the fourth member of Congress to be picked off in a primary this cycle after Rep. Dan Lipinski (D-IL), Rep. Steve King (R-IA), and Rep. Riggleman (R-VA)*.

*Riggleman has not yet conceded, and has made unspecified reports of voting fraud.

Harris Walz 2024

16 terms is crazy. He needed to retire along time ago but he's still there and I'm glad Hillary has thrown her name in there because she's still very popular in NY. I wouldn't mind a progressive in that spot either so it's a win/win for me.
