I don't think it sounds that "generic" though. It sounds like a lot of old-school house, disco, techno, etc., which is what they were going for. Several interviews with her producers mention the fact that they wanted this album to feel familiar, yet contemporary, and I think they accomplished that. With BTW, they were just doing a bunch of crazy sh*t that ended up working out really well. With Chromatica, they didn't do that because it wasn't what they envisioned.

The songs you mentioned have similar productions, maybe, but they all sound distinctly their own. SL sounds different than Sour Candy, which sounds different than FW.

I think Plastic Doll's lyrics are fine. They're not necessarily the best, but they're not awful. And actually, if it does sound "cringey and immature," I think that's kinda the point...especially with a song like Plasic Doll. Sonically, it sounds "immature," but I think that helps to reinforce the metaphor of using a plastic doll, which is a children's toy. I think it's really clever.

As for the other lyrics you mentioned, I also think they're fine. I don't see why you have a problem with them.

Finally...these are MTN's lyrics:

I'm gonna marry the night
I won't give up on my life
I'm a warrior queen
Live passionately, tonight

I'm gonna marry the dark
Gonna make love to the stark
I'm a soldier to my
Own emptiness, I'm a winner

I'm gonna marry the night
I'm gonna marry the night
I'm gonna marry the night
I'm gonna marry the night

I'm gonna marry the night
I'm gonna marry the night
I'm gonna marry the night
I'm gonna marry the night

I'm gonna marry the
I'm gonna marry the
I'm gonna marry the
I'm gonna marry the

I'm gonna marry the night
I'm not gonna cry anymore
I'm gonna marry the night
Leave nothin' on these streets to explore

M-m-m-marry, m-m-m-marry,
M-m-m-marry the night.
Oh, m-m-marry, m-m-m-marry,
M-m-m-marry the night.

I'm gonna lace up my boots
Throw on some leather and cruise
Down the street that I love
In my fishnet gloves, I'm a sinner

Then I'll go down to the bar
But I won't cry anymore
I'll hold my whiskey up high
Kiss the bartender twice, I'm a loser

I'm gonna marry the night
I'm gonna marry the night
I'm gonna marry the night
I'm gonna marry the night

I'm gonna marry the night
The night, the night
The night, the night

Don't get me wrong, I really love the song, and I think the verses are good, but MTN is no more of a "masterpiece" than like 3/4ths of Chromatica.

Ok... You just exactly proved my point. On chromatica they used production that's been done before and on BTW they did something fresh and new and exciting. I don't have a problem with that and I don't think it's a bad thing, but it just simply doesn't excite me as much because of that.

I didn't say SL, sour candy & free woman sounded alike to each other... I said their productions have been done before (individually).

Plastic doll has a good message, as I said, but it just doesn't hit the mark for me because of those lyrics and sonically, I feel it's made for a younger audience maybe, 12-13 year olds or something...

Can't see your point with MTN since you said 911 was one of her best songs lyrically and half of it, too, is the repetition of the pre-chorus and chorus. Nothing wrong with it

Well, you said it was generic. I said it wasn't generic, but instead more nostalgic. Where's the line between when something is "generic" and "dated" and when something's "nostalgic"? Cause if an artist made an 80s sound recording, it's "nostalgic," but when Gaga takes inspiration from 90s house (but also, going as far back as the late 70s for some disco inspiration), now it sounds "dated"? SL, SC, and FW are all examples of her attributing the production for Chromatica to other, more older, sounds. That was said in the interview recently with her producers, especially with FW.

If the lyrics don't hit it for you with PD, that's fine, I guess. They don't hit me like some other songs do, but I also wouldn't say it's "made for a younger audience." I feel like that's a weird critique. Like, Poker Face and Just Dance sound like they could also be made for "younger audiences" too if I chose to believe that....

The difference between MTN and 911, for me, is that 911 (lyrically) has much better verses and choruses. I like MTN more sonically, but lyrically I do think 911 is superior.

Ok, I get where you are coming from. If you'd like, I can say "been done before" instead of "generic", for me it doesn't change much anyways. I respect your opinion regarding PD and MTN/911, and it's not like we can come to a resolution here since that's just our individual thoughts on the songs and there's no way to objectively tell if a lyric is good/bad, I just expressed my side as did you
