I could've been but with different vocals. The album version is too rough for the GP

YES, I just rewatched the JWT. and it would have been incredible if that was the first bit of Joanne we heard at the time.
The song is meant to introduce us to the concept of Joanne and everything she talks about, in fact Marry the night, Aura, and Alice are the first songs and perfect introductions for the album, i hope Gaga gets her way cause Interscope Messes with the leads

PI was a Top 15 hit and I honestly can’t imagine Diamond Heart as anything other than a deep cut (Joanne has quite a few of those, but there’s nothing wrong with it.) I wish John Wayne was released as a single. Perfect illusion is a really good Gaga song and imo includes some of the best vocals of her career

Honestly it was just a horrendous lead in general and never should of been a single.

There's multiple tracks on the album that probably would have done better

It would be a better lead single than PI,

i love the chorus, maybe the vocals needed a bit more polish but so does PI

Just like Judas and Scheiße, one is more polished and "commercial" than the other. In this case, PI is the more polished and more commercial than DH. DH sounds rough and kind of "weak" production wise. Her voice on DH isn't polished to sound more easy either. PI was a perfect lead single though I would have liked to see A-Yo as lead.

I like Diamond Heart but that song would’ve flopped harder than Perfect Illusion.

I LOVE PI, but let’s not act like it’s one of her best singles. It only charted as high as it did because of the fans. Can anyone explain why she never performed it in the US (aside from tour dates)? She definitely had many radio interviews but never promoted it beyond that? The only performance I remember was the Japan one, where she performed it acoustic on the piano. She did SNL the week the album was released but performed A-YO and Million Reasons. And obviously we know she sung MR many many many times after that.....

Truly, Dancin’ in Circles should’ve been the lead. Seriously. Some of the lyrics are racy, but the song could’ve been toned down and/or edited for radio.

Unpopular opinion but Dancin in Circles shouldn't be on Joanne and the bonus tracks (JAD and Grigio Girls) should be on the main tracklist

Edit: On topic I love Diamond Heart but I don't know if the general public would care for it much, PI has that big pop hook

But the general public didn’t like PI- it was a total flop. Diamond Heart would have been a better first single or Dancin in Circles.

Agree! I think it should have been the lead. It would have been a much better intro to the world of Joanne, and I think Hot AC would have really embraced it.

Yeah. It would have been awesome lead track, and a better representation of the album. Though I think PI was an Interscope decision. Diamond Heart wouldn't have had a chance on pop radio. They would've had to pull some Cederic Gervais unnecesary remix-type shenanigans. I think a lot of ther reason why Joanne ended up so weird (for lack of a better word, because I genuinely enjoy it and don't think its a bad album or anything) is that there seemed to be a lot of label interference with it - like them literally sending Bloodpop to her. I think they were trying get a more obvious radio and streaming hit on the album, when the album really didn't lend itself well to Top 40, hence the label placing all their faith in PI for lead single (it was slim pickings in that regard).

I would have done:

Perfect Illusion

A-Yo (Mirror on the Ceiling)

Million Reasons

Diamond Heart

Joanne

Not at all, it was good for what it was. Dancin' In Circles should've been the lead single.
