Bernie doesn’t support defunding the police either

+ he wants demilitarization too.

His comments follow Dem Nominee Joe Biden, who actually proposed a $300M budget increase to fix policing recently. He will face off Trump in November’s 2020 Election.

I have to agree tbh. Focusing on the cost widely misses the mark. Transformation of the police system will definitely cost more money, but it’s worth it for black lives.

It's not going to be worth the tons of money they're going to put into the sad attempt at 'training' them properly. The whole system is corrupt. It needs to be abolished and redesigned - much like the Monster Ball. :ohwell:

Why are small town police departments equipped like armies from sci-fi movies but doctors have to operate on patients with some toothpicks and scotch tape?

Well, I disagree.

So many libs think that us "Bernie bros" have some cult regarding Bernie as a person.

No. He was just the best vehicle for the policies that we hold dear. That's literally it. I'm done with him now.

Okay in that case they need to give the police The Fame Kills tour and just scrap the whole thing

New Jersey announced today that they are going to start licensing police officers. I think this is the best option. A lot of people are calling to defund the police and are only looking at the immediate problem and are likely charged with resentment, and rightfully so. But the solution to this is not to defund police officers.

Thank GOD!

The right choice. The whole "defund police" **** is such a mess. The messaging is very wrong. You can say undercut police budget, redirect resources, but to say defund police straight up will hand trump the presidency

This sort of fits here (it’s about police reform but I didn’t think it warranted its own thread)...apparently Jonny Goood used to be a cop and there’s an article about his take on it all and what he thinks needs to be done, from his perspective as a Black man and former cop

https://www.google.com/amp/s/m.eonline.com/ca/amp/news/1160502/former-police-officer-and-lady-gaga-s-bass-guitarist-recalls-witnessing-racial-discrimination

Basically it comes down to changing the tone from the beginning at the police academy, and creating better avenues to report others’ behavior. Not doing away with everything entirely

reality’s tight if the music is right

Yeah, inb4 someone comes with 3 paragraphs explaining once again what defunding should mean, but its the worst word they couldve used it to describe it.

I don't see how taking away resources from the police would churn out well trained police. I would think it would do the direct opposite. I do however see how totally reforming the police from scratch with a good budget would help.

Seriously. Look at what happens to underfunded school systems and the consequences that has that extends beyond those directly affected.

and have what, lawlessness? Clearly that’s not what you mean. Since Bernie supports radial and effective change here, as he usually does, seems like you’re literally getting hung up on the name “police.”

If you’re not calling for lawlessness and the purge irl, then I figure Bernie stills agrees with you. Don’t get caught on the word “police...”

It makes zero sense to defund an entity which needs reform. The only thing that will come about from defunding the police is spite, rather than what the masses want achieved.

People constantly berate the U.S.’ education system and call for improvements regularly. Is the solution to defund the education system to achieve that? Absolutely not.
