Due to high demand volume there is not much time to verify and scrutinize each claim so most applications have been granted However Trudeau has said that later they will attempt to go thru it and find red flags and abuse and those who claimed it fraudulently will face heavy fines and possible jail time Trudeau also made it clear that in cases of honest mistakes such as someone thinking they qualified but didn't they may simply be asked to pay it back. Tbh. The Government is spending a fortune on benefits and stimulus and it's easy in times like this when the Government is being more generous because of circumstances it's so much easier to abuse the system (individuals and businesses alike) I heard of a case some weeks ago (I think it was in Toronto) where 4 members of a household each applied ($8000 a month total) and none qualified. Most likely they are threatening it now in the hopes that people who did abuse the system will panic and pay it back on their own. Some people are fraudulent because they’re broke, so even if the courts succeed over them, there’s little to no money left. Get the pinot ready, because it's turtle time. They will probably be penalized some other way if they can't pay Most people who lost their job qualify for CERB anyway the requirements are not as demanding as regular EI benefits. Most who don't qualify it's probably because they have work anyway and if it's a student entering work-force for the first time there's another benefit they qualify for So most ppl who commit fraud with CERB I would say are not necessarily broke. They probably are legit abusing it. I'm sure many ppl who need the help may not be covered by CERB or another benefit because it doesn't account for every single possible circumstance people could have and in those cases ppl might genuinely not have the money to pay it back But I suspect in a lot of cases it's just fowel play. About 80% of the workforce still managed to maintain their jobs so...
