JRCF29 8,230
Former presidential candidate and current U.S Senator (I-VT) announced in a Medium post today that he was endorsing liberal activist Jamaal Bowman in his challenge against 16-term congressman Eliot Engel in New York. The former high school principal has seen a fundraising surge in the past week following police brutality protests around the country- and a hot-mic gaffe by Engel at an event in which he said that if he didn't have a primary opponent, he "wouldn't care" about delivering remarks on the Black Lives Matter movement. Sanders' endorsement puts him in a familiar position: one in direct opposition to the establishment, which led by Speaker Pelosi has coalesced around Engel. In addition to that endorsement, Sanders also weighed in on the primary fight to take on Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell in Kentucky by boosting State Rep. Charles Booker; National Democrats have been supporting the candidacy of 2018 congressional candidate Amy McGrath, whose brand of centrism has alienated progressive voters. No matter who wins, the GOP is favored to hold the seat in the red state. Progressives have had a rough go of it thus far in the cycle, with the exception of Marie Newman, who narrowly defeated anti-abortion Blue Dog Democrat Dan Lipinski in the Illinois primary. Last week, mainstream Democrats like Theresa Greenfield and Steve Bullock coasted to primary victories over fringe and outsider candidates in Iowa and Montana Senate contests, respectively. Centrist > destructive fascist. Anyway, the way the NY politicians have been handling this is so disappointing. Time for a serious shake up there and progressives have a real chance at taking it Whimsical bitch
MJHolland 12,725
Engel's got to go. What he said was terrible, though not shocking coming from an old white straight man.
