...absolutely not. Germany starts holocaust education in 6th/7th grade and it is a recurring theme in history until graduation, specifically the way the regime oppressed and killed people and was founded on injustice. From my experience, it was not presented as some hoorah-patriotic non-issue that is casually glossed over.

Well. That's one exception. In general, schools stay away from controversial topics.

And let's not forget that US also has black history month.

Schools only teach war in a moral ethical setting, not in a p*rnographic sadistic setting, which is what many are advocating. I’m quite happy with not traumatising kids with decapitations and what not.

Maybe where you went but we learned all about the atrocities of war. We learned about hangings, slaughter and murder at the hands of the Kings/Queens, we learned of the Holocaust, learned of all the ancient egyptian/Greek rituals etc. None of those traumatised kids, none. If we can teach these subjects to kids than we can teach everything. Were basically asking to get rid of the idea that history is written by the winners and teach all aspects. That isn't traumatising but reality and educational.

Imagine thinking these statues are essential for history and aren't only a way to venerate and honor pieces of sh*t :billie:

Take them all down and destroy them :fthis:

Like... it also completely leaves out the aspects of human memory culture and that statues of historic figures are supposed to signify public adoration and appreciation. If the person is not publically adored AND is not worth of getting that honor bestowed on them, it should be taken away. Like... getting commemorated is a privilige, not a right.

Taking that privilege away doesn't mean that you "erase history", it means that the values of current society (in which those statues exist) don't line up with the values the that statue represents. The names are still in the history books and people can easily educate themselves on what that person has done, the good, the bad & the atrocious.

I’m not sure enslaving over 80,000 people is just a ‘flaw’...

Just speaking on Churchill though, the idea of removing is too far. He helped us through WWII. Would these people calling him a racist prefer Hitler? :lmao:

“Teach all aspects” of war? Sure, let’s all learn about the Nazi’s as we need their point of view because they’re just as equal!

I think you’re confusing education with the media. With education there is the goal to inspire, by showing the good that society is capable of, rather than the bad.

With the media however, such as films as well as the news, there is the goal to inform but not necessarily to inspire. Sadly, the media does far more misinforming than informing.

They should but they are too busy getting their education from Hollywood movies that portray brown heroes with white actors lmao.

Don’t be selfish. Just because you do, schools don’t want to show underage children murder, genocide, bloodshed and rape. That is what universities are for.

I both agree & disagree with your point. I was only 14 when I was shown in History class a gruesome video of the Einsatzgruppen killing Jews. I was honestly traumatised and I even felt dizzy, I asked the teacher to go to the toilet to splash water on my face but then I didn't die and years later I don't regret seeing that video.

I do want education to be more interesting but not necessarily more gruesome. I acknowledge that many curriculums sugar coat past atrocities or often ignore them, but at the same time I know why they do it: they’re afraid of being sued by soccer moms declaring “You made my son watch what?” Part of me thinks that all parents should donate their services to schools, so that they can learn exactly what the kids are learning. That way they don’t complain about exposing their kids to the rape and violence. It’s truly the parents who decide what get’s taught at schools, not the schools themselves. Parents need to be incorporated into the teaching structure, if they are going to dictate what gets taught. I think too much blame is put on schools for not doing enough, when they’re actually quite limited in what they’re allowed to do. Parents should have greater obligations and if they were more active in their kids education then we would get better and more balanced students.

You're twisting words, no one said Nazi's are equal, and diverting away from the original point which was that kids shouldn't learn XYZ because it will traumatuse them when kids learn other "bad stuff". Its just a failure in the educational system lbr

Good.

Not sure why anyone says taking down a statue is "erasing history". Statues are generally used to commemorate someone, These people don't deserve that respect. The History still stands but without the glorification of a problematic figure.
