BenG 19,908
Let me just say a few things about comparing albums, be it using pure numbers or percentage changes. They are actually bad metrics for the performance of an album. 1. The number of tracks directly affects pure numbers. 2. The number of official/promo singles affects the percentage decrease, especially if there is promo. Hence, a fairer comparison would be to remove top 3 and bottom 3 songs, then take the average of the remaining tracks. This gives a better picture of how much the album as a body of work is being consumed because it removes outliers and normalise the number of tracks across albums. Due to the front-loaded nature of streams, be it a new track or a new album, it is best to analyse the downward slope and stable region separately. This is because they mean very different things. The peak represents the introduction of new music to the GP, the downward slope represents how fast interest is lost and the stable region represents returning listeners. In the grand scheme of things, the rate of decline is not really an important factor because longevity ultimately relies on the number of streams in the stable region. That said, a continuous big % decrease could be worrying because it indicates that the stabilisation has yet to be achieved. I'm pretty sure streaming services look at the % decrease between the peak and stable streams for an artist's past music when deciding which songs should be play-listed. Playlists introduce a song to a new audience and hence they would choose a song that can continue to bring in streams (hence revenue) when it's removed from playlists. This could be one of the reasons why Gaga might have poorer play-listing when compared to some of her peers but this has slowly improved because the ASIB era has shown that Gaga can retain interest among listeners. We will see Chromatica's effect during her next album release. TLDR: Number of tracks and number of singles distort album streams. Longevity of album relies on stable streams, not necessarily steepness of decline.
