A study has shown that the more basic and generic English lyrics a song has, the more successful the song becomes (like "for", "dancefloor", "more"). That is because in overseas countries where English is not native, the people can understand it easier. The lyrics than become easy and commonly repeated with basic vocabulary (like you can understand all the lyrics after four years of English lessons). Nowadays they are rarely songs with sophisticated lyrics (that require a more advanced leven of English) on the charts. Actually, if you write a song in advanced English, your chances beocme lower ot beocme successful, so... the most common words are chosen that everybody has heard endless times.

I think Chromatica has a low level of lyrics and is less osphisticated because Lady Gaga wants to be successful and high chart position , rather than deep , meaingingful lyrics.

Yes. Just look at Bad Romance vs TikTok :toofunny:

It's kinda useless to have a "deep lyrical" album nowadays when the GP will just PAN you out and the award bodies will ignore you as well (NFR, Melodrama).

However, I think Chromatica more substance than just your average pop trash song, it actually entails meaningful lyrics and tackles various issues unlike some albums that just focuses on infatuation, love and heart break :billie:

i don't think so

specially not when she wrote this.

Turnin' up emotional faders
Keep repeating self-hating phrases
I have heard enough of these voices
Almost like I have no choice
This is biological stasis
My mood's shifting to manic places
Wish I laughed and kept the good friendships
Watch life, here I go again

i think maybe the lyrics are more simplistic which probaly because of the genre she decided to display on this album.

Just because your ears focus on production doesn’t mean the lyrics are subpar to her other albums.

When I was young, I prayed for lightning
My mother said it would come and find me
I found myself without a prayer
I lost my love and no one cared
When I was young, I prayed for lightning

I heard one sine from above
Then the signal split in two
The sound created stars like me and you
Before there was love, there was silence
I heard one sine
And it healed my heart

I need you to listen to me, please believe me
I'm completely lonely, please don't judge me
When your tears are falling, I'll catch them as they fall
I need you to listen to me, please don't leave me
I'm not perfect yet, but I'll keep trying
When your tears are falling, I'll catch them as they fall

'Cause inside, we are really made the same
In life, waiting's just a stupid game

Lift me up, give me a start
'Cause I've been flying with some broken arms
Lift me up, just a small nudge
And I'll be flying like a thousand doves

Could you pull me out of this alive?
Where's my body? I'm stuck in my mind
I'm tired of screaming at the top of my lungs
Oh my mother, I'm in the hole, I'm falling down

Every single day, yeah, I dig a grave
Then I sit inside it, wondering if I'll behave
It’s a game I play, and I hate to say
You're the worst thing and the best thing that's happened to me

I don't know what to do, you don't know what to say
The scars on my mind are on replay, r-replay
The monster inside you is torturing me
The scars on my mind are on replay

I didn't ask for the daylight
'Cause I was born for the night, and it changed my life
I knew the hurt wouldn't be small
You said you'd love me forever, but you don't call

Turnin' up emotional faders
Keep repeating self-hating phrases
I have heard enough of these voices
Almost like I have no choice
This is biological stasis
My mood's shifting to manic places
Wish I laughed and kept the good friendships
Watch life, here I go again

Keep my dolls inside diamond boxes
Save 'em 'til I know I'm gon' drop this
Front I've built around my oasis
Paradise is in my hands
Holdin' on so tight to this status
It's not real, but I'll try to grab it
Keep myself in beautiful places
Paradise is in my hands

We could be lovers, even just tonight
We could be anything you want
We could be jokers, brought to the daylight
We could break all of our stigma
I'll be your enigma

Sine From Above is one of my favourite songs lyrically on the album. It just seemed that every song on Joanne was on fire lyrically, and I don't get the same from chromatica. I feel the same for songs like the cure, WDYDT, and Hair Body Face. I don't think she is as inspired to make pop nowadays.

The only song that I feel that "fire" from is Babylon, and even that song is overtaken by lines that don't make sense to me

"Body's moving like a sculpture"

how does a body move like a sculpture? Sculptures are completely still, they don't move

I think you missed the irony there.

Kindness rules all.

I completely get what you mean, I can’t understand what tf she says half the time on my first listen because of how she splices up her words, like “I remember that-that...” in FW, just sounds like gibberish

It's definitely a different standard from Folk or Indie or whatever other genre of music. I think she still has to negotiate some of her lyricism with her intentions, which were to return to a more accessible, but still quite dark and relatable, form of POP music. I don't think she's at her lyrical peak either, but there's also the issue that (and maybe its unfair to point out) Gaga was openly on drugs when she wrote TFM and BTW, which people consider to be her peak, so at least I'm happy that her new lyrics seem to come from a more sincere, sober place. I may be totally wrong, though. Obviously, no one knows what goes on in her private life.

in comparison to songs like Marry The Night, I completely understand your argument. “Love is the new denim on black, skeleton guns are wedding bells in the attic” is so unique and interesting, but quite the number of songs on this album lack this style of lyricism

This verse is SO good. That's why 911 is one of the top songs for me. Lyrically strong, melodically catchy, thematically heavy.

"I was protected by the monks of Azarath, I was raised by my friends. They are my family, this is my home and you are not welcome here."

This reminds me when my old boss read Alejandro lyrics out loud. Trying to prove a point that they make no sense :laughga:

911, replay, sine from above, and Babylon are the songs that I really enjoy lyrically in context of the music. The rest of the album falls short for me. Maybe with different production and structure i would think differently

This is lyrically one of her best albums...literally what are you talking about?

She said she wanted the message to be loud and clear. Simple lyricism and less metaphors doesn’t mean it’s bad.
