Making a grand stand & telling someone to “own” that they’re inherently racist is not the way to go about it. Not to mention, people who grow up outside of America are not always exposed to the same racial biases that we are. Hollywood & government propaganda force it down our throats that the bad guy is always black & regardless if you are actively racist, you still have unconscious biases like you said BUT @Economy didn’t grow up here, nor did his family grow up in Canada like he already stated so you can’t possibly know the type of media etc. that he or his family were exposed to. Hopefully you understand what I’m saying because the way you’re going about it by generalizing people who you don’t even know just causes more friction. I’ve tried telling people I know personally about their unconscious bias & they shut me down because instead of telling them how I came to realize my own I tried to say “you’re racist end of story” like you’re doing here & it never works. You can also say “it’s not my responsibility to tip toe around white peoples feelings” but where does that get you? Clearly the tactics being used are not working & sorry if you feel that it’s not your responsibility to be kind to white people but it takes work from BOTH sides to get to an understanding. If one is gonna say “not my job” especially when someone clearly isn’t getting it then you just go nowhere.

Two points: One, surely you realize that the US pretty much holds a monopoly on most forms of media, so it IS forced down almost everyone's throats (except countries where American media is severely or completely restricted, like China or North Korea). Also, I'm not American, I moved here five years ago, but I'd never claim that not being originally from the US means I don't have to educate myself. As I mentioned in an earlier post, though, anti-Blackness is global?? So is white supremacy?? Anyone not seeing it is simply being willfully ignorant.

Two, I kind of understand where you are coming from. Defeating racism won't happen unless we get white folk in allyship, but it kinda sounds like you wanna argue that people of color should take special care in approaching white folk and educating them. I disagree. It is completely unfair to expect POC to educate white folk gently and with care or whatever while dealing with racism every day. That's on other white folk. White folk who are truly allies can spend as much time as they want (and should) educating other white folk about it. The rest of us are exhausted.

That’s not what I’m arguing at all. I literally said BOTH sides need to put in the work instead of what you just said above for the second time: “that’s on white folk.” No, it’s not, it’s on everyone. I understand that’s it’s no ones job to educate white people but the angle from which you’re approaching this topic doesn’t. work. It just doesn’t. Compassion, understanding, & effort is what’s needed & again, I’m not saying it’s POC should take “special care” to educate white people or that it’s all on them, both sides need to do the work. I understand the bitterness, resentment & anger that’s been built up for hundreds of years because I myself am gay & I know what discrimination is like. I’m not claiming to understand the struggle POC deal with but I can at least comprehend it. Idk, I just feel like we won’t get anywhere if we come from a place of bitterness or continue saying “that’s your job” because it will literally take all of us to make a meaningful change & I understand if some people can’t come at it from that angle, I just hope they will someday.

I honestly just find throwing around accusations that one is racist and uneducated just a total turn off and just makes me take the person less seriously.

I think we've tried for decades to have reasonable conversations and to talk to them at their level and still they won't listen. We're exhausted, and rightfully so.

I'm gay too and I am also exhausted at str8 folk tryna tell me to chill. If you had at it with a straight man who told you that "because the law says you can't discriminate against gay people then straight privilege doesn't exist" (which is a good analogy to what this user was saying), wouldn't you be tired? If you have the energy to keep trying to persuade folk who are literally silencing our voices and telling us our struggles don't exist, then I commend you, but you can't ask that of all of us.

Hmm. I'm conflicted. 

This is a sweet gesture. What gets me is how most white people in this country seem to act like kumbaya gestures of unity are the end all be all and then refuse to challenge the system as a whole.

Moments like this are certainly net positive, but ending police brutality is going to require radical systemic change.

Again, I didn’t say I want you or POC to educate them. I want all of us to, but yeah never mind. I respect your feelings, I just think a different strategy is needed, that’s all.
