Reintroduction of wolves helped Yellowstone willows recover

The reintroduction of wolves in Yellowstone National Park has been linked to the recovery of tall willows, according to a new study led by Oregon State University. 

The research shows that the wolves’ predation on elk is a major reason for an increase in the height of willows in northern Yellowstone, said lead author and wildlife ecologist Luke Painter.

In 1995, there were nearly 20,000 elk in northern Yellowstone. By March of 2019, elk numbers had diminished to 4,149.

The findings show that passive restoration through the return of predators has begun to reverse the loss of willows, something active culling of elk was unable to accomplish in the past, said Painter.

I was a Ranger near Yellowstone in Wyoming and there are so many reasons the reintroduction of a keystone is SO important. It changed the way the river flows, diminishes invasive species, set things back to a more natural way. People have really demonized animals like wolves over time, mostly with myth and lazy land management. The wolves of Yellowstone are an amazing success story that I'm so proud of.
