MJHolland 12,725 Posted May 31, 2020 Share Posted May 31, 2020 just want to pause here and remind everyone why these protests are happening. what we are seeing is the direct result of — and, a revolt against — systems and actions of white supremacy. this is the root of the issue and what comes out of these protests is a direct result of that. that, at the very least, is something that we should all be outraged by. rest in peace to those that lost their lives. I'm here downtown. Police tear gassed the BLM medics, including some people I know, and opened fire on peaceful protesters without any reason. Medics ended up having to treat a few bullet wounds while also recovering from tear gas. This was night 2. On Friday night, police confiscated all of the medical supplies. That was after they used their vehicles to block in marching protesters and throw tear gas bombs and shoot rubber bullets. The protest did not turn into two nights of rioting and looting until after the cops attacked. Why did Indy BLM bring medical supplies on Friday if they weren't expecting riots? Because two weeks ago when Sean Reed was murdered and they had a peaceful protest, they were also tear gassed and shot with pepper spray bullets just for standing with signs. I agree with you completely, but, the multiple murders following this TRAGIC event. Not to mention the torching and looting of innocent stores. It's not right. Protests is what we need not violence. Fuelling violence with more violence gets us no where. In fact, it moves us back. We all, no matter black or white, deserve respect, but getting it out of destruction is not genuine and is instead causing respect only because of fear. Treating white people as the problem is completely unjustified. The issue is racism. This is not aimed at peaceful protesters. The peaceful protesters are heroes and to be admired. We also need to be outraged by the fact that non-black people and looters are turning up to peaceful protests and destroying property and causing damage only for it to be blamed on black people. Protesting is great, but I can’t believe the amount of people on here who aren't condemning the actions of hatred simply because they’re too blind to separate the two. These people are making matters worse, these people are fueling the fire and they’re doing it on purpose to further divide the country. And everyone on here supporting the riots and the destruction of buildings and lives are supporting them. Don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of black people who support those things as well, but when you back the riots know you’re backing everyone who’s vandalizing buildings, that means burning down affordable housing sites, destroying small business owners, etc. To those of you who wanted anarchy on the streets, you’ve got exactly what you wanted. That's why I can't believe some individuals on here are being so cavalier about risking other people's lives, saying they should go protest, complaining about who's not doing what from the safety of their homes. What you’re saying about this setting is back is not true. Does nobody on this site remember or know what stonewall was? It was a VOLENT landmark queer demonstration/protest that historians credit with launching and advancing gay rights in America. I hope for the rest of your life, you will remember the painful imagery we’re seeing across the country, and I hope you know that that feeling is what people of color feel every single day. Lastly, yes, it IS on all of us white people. We may not all be actively racist, but we enjoy and reap the benefits of a racist system as Americans everyday. Unless you actively rise up to change that, YOU ARE PART OF THE PROBLEM. It’s 2020, I expect you to be anti-racist, not just “not racist”. Because that is what being an ally means.
