"Malibu Gaga" is, I think, a reference to "Malibu Stacy", a plastic doll from The Simpsons world that is supposed to be the a parody of Barbie.

Malibu Barbie is also an actual Barbie doll.

There used to be a whole line of Malibu Barbie dolls:

I think she used the phrase "Malibu Barbie" because she was comparing herself to Barbie (fake, plastic doll) and she used to live in Malibu, and since Malibu Barbie actually existed, it made sense to put them together.

Absolutely. I noticed it immediately. I’m sure this song has multiple meanings, but is also clearly about her fans complaining about her fashion choices / lack of expensive avante garde fashion during the Joanne era. Also, how fans btch about how they think Malibu changed Gaga and made her less exciting to follow. (All of the candids of her in short shorts going to Starbucks, fans saying she looks sad and unhappy). I saw PLENTY of threads about it during Joanne. Sad that she noticed. Glad she made a song saying “fck you, I’m not your plastic doll”

I just had a HUGE revelation about Plastic Doll and I haven’t seen anyone else on here say it yet so it’s probably wrong :ladyhaha:

so maybe I’m just interpreting it wrong but, in the Plastic Doll bridge she says:

“Tell me, who dressed you? Where'd you get that hat?

Why is she cryin'? What's the price tag?

Who's that girl, Malibu Gaga?

Looks so sad, what is this saga?”

Is this referring to Joanne? Like who dressed you? Where did you get that hat - the JOANNE hat and her fans criticising her when she revealed the aesthetic for Joanne as it was so stripped back from classic Gaga she got a lot of hate.:stalkga: Then the “why she crying?” Joanne was a deep album for her but people always said ‘why is she crying over an aunt she never met’ etc etc

AM I ONTO SOMETHING? But then the “Malibu Gaga” part throws me off:saladga:

EDIT: the “what is this saga”  - saga means like storyline so she’s referring to fans  like “wtf is this era” like “where are you going with this album/chapter Gaga?” 🤔🤔

Yup I agree :vegas:

The reference to the hat shows that it is about Joanne. Gaga also lived in Malibu during that era.

I'm currently obsessed with this song. :gaycat:

To add to what people have already said, I think her Met Gala performance/look could be intepreted as an emodiment of "Malibu Gaga" in some ways.

“Tell me, who dressed you? Where'd you get that hat?

With her Joanne-era hats in boxes like accessories, the oversized, retro, cellphone purse, and the continuous outfit changes themselves, it all fits with the theme of being a "plastic doll".   Her campy, larger-than-life poses and the way that her clothes are taken off by someone else also align with this idea.  Also interesting to think about the connection of the word "saga" used in the song, to the storytelling that the changing of the looks tells, as she reverts back to one of her most iconic looks - the bra and panties, fishnet combo. Underneath it all she's channelling authenticity.
