andy 106
There’s no excuse to destroy businesses and property like this. The target, auto zone have nothing to do with the murdering cop. trashing and looting businesses does not help anything. #MalibuGaga

If not believing in violence against innocent people makes me privileged then so be it. But if all the privileged people in the world believed in peaceful resolution we as a society would not be in the situations we are in. Recklessness and a heated heart are never a good pair, both the privileged and unprivileged know this to be true. Like I’ve said before, there are better ways to handle this than destroying innocent people’s lives. And why should we be here and have a conversation about police brutality and racism when we are on the same page about it being bad? We should never have to have a back and fourth about that topic. If we were to get a 10 paged thread on GGD about people’s opinions on Racism, sexism, homophobia, etc. and if it’s alright then that is troubling to say the least. a bit off topic, but what do you propose happen when the riots are over? What can the government do to make sure racism (systemic) ends? Ads reminding people not to be racist, More teachings in class rooms regarding racism, Stricter punishment on police officers who murder civilians? This is not meant to be an attack, I’m just curious as to what you propose would be a just response by the governments. I find that a bit nonsense tbh. Not everything has to comeback to priveledge all the time Were talking about serious things in society and reactions that are gonna hurt people and that merits serious discussion at the very least There may be times where if people tell me not to talk or comment cause I'm white I just do for the sake of not starting something but there's other times where I don't care if that's what some people want im gonna speak my mind because these actions don't make the debate JUST about race anymore it also becomes a matter of whether or not it's justified to damage innocent people's property who have nothing to do with the situation for the sake of sending a message. So I'm sorry but I don't think only black people have a right to comment on the protest situation the moment you start bringing people's entire livelyhoods (their businesses) into the battle and destroying them when many of them may not even be racist (some could be black themselves even) Me commenting on this just like you is not about taking away from the seriousness of the root problem. But I strongly disapprove of it nevertheless I'm not the kind of person to be black and white politically at all with stances always making things about sides. I don't believe calling out something automatically should mean u therefore are discrediting everything behind it or that u automatically agreeing with the other side I was on the protestors side until now. Now I think some went too far. Does that mean I'm defending the racist cop? Absolutely not! And I want justice to be served. Being disgusted with these reactions doesn't mean I can't be disgusted at the racist actions just the same that caused the uproar to begin with

Defund the police + mandatory cultural competency workshops for every single law enforcement official. Create a White House task force to oversee the investigation and response to acts of racial violence. Ensure the national curriculum includes a focus on civics and racial justice, as well as the history of slavery, Jim Crow, and American imperialism. And I mean teach it extensively, uncomfortably so, don't just gloss over it. And, ofc, reparations: create specific policies that will benefit Black folk, programs to boost Black-owned businesses, etc. Also, abolish ICE. And others are just riled up and want to be selfish. Not that it’s right, but it’s understandable. A lot of people don’t have the patience or wherewithal to think about sending a message. They just want to take things for themselves. The anger may be understandable but I'm a bit surprised many people are borderline justifying the actions I'd like to see these same individuals put their all in starting a business or shop and have someone destroy it to send a message on a social problem you probably aren't even among the people who cause it Id like to see how supportive they would still be tbh And if any claim they still would be... Frankly I'm not sure I believe that even if some of them might convince themselves they would I don't think it takes much common sense at all to reach the conclusion that this is not ok If we wanna start using causes to justify anything we might as well end civilization and go back to being tribal and animal like cuz that's literally what that is. No civility or ethics just emotion and retaliation

First off, the protests were peaceful until they were literally attacked by the police and tear-gassed. Also, funny how white people armed with rifles stormed into the state capitol and the police did nothing of the sort to them, let's talk about that, too, shall we? I also wanna point out that several reports from protesters who were at the scene are saying that white supremacists and undercover police officers were seen burning buildings, likely to start some sh!t and blame it on the protesters. I'm not sure if these are true, but frankly I would not be surprised (spoiler: these tactics have been used MANY TIMES before).

I recently took an Asian-American history course, that **** was intense, and rightfully so. So if we could teach black history in the classrooms like that I would support it. I highlight this part because I’d like to clarify something. When you say black folk, are you referring to African-Americans as an ethnic group (those that can trace their history back to slavery) or are you including recently immigrated Africans as well? And if someone is mixed, do reparations get eased? Would the genetic makeup or tradable lineage be calculated, or will it be based off whether someone identifies as African American with no background check? This has always seemed to be a very complicated issue to me. What are your thoughts on it.

I can't blame protestors get more agitated when police get agressive but setting buildings on fire and stealing is not a necessary response. Those businesses are not the law enforcement. I don't get being upset at cops then taking it out on shops... Wheres the connection there? And i didn't hear about the whites with rifles but yes if that happened that deserves attention too then. What happened there? As for white supremacists or extreme conservatives trying to frame... I also don't know if that's true but that would hardly be shocking they got their strong political agendas and messed up methods to spread hate
AsleepOnTheCeiling 6,998
I don't get how people are justifying burning and looting businesses. The issue isn't with the owners of these businesses, but in this specific case the police. The person responsible for Floyd's death had his address leaked and it would have been possible to protest there if anywhere. I also don't ultimately understand the destruction of police property, as it comes out of taxpayer's pockets, and will ultimately come out of other parts of budgets (such as parks and rec) to cover repairs for the property destroyed. This has always seemed to be a very complicated issue to me. What are your thoughts on it. Black folk in America are treated like they are Black. Ain't nobody asking George Floyd what his ancestry was before they murdered him. So when I said Black folk, I meant Black folk (also, I wanna point out my opinion truly weighs so little in the real world and these are hypotheticals that can and should be resolved by them; Black folk and nobody else must have a say in their own liberation). Background checks would be complicated and I can totally see those being mismanaged, which is why self-identification is the only way I can see this happening. Ofc that also means there's a chance of flaws in the system (Rachel Dolezal kinda situations) but there are ways to decrease those situations to a minimum by imposing punishments for those. It's tricky but feasible.

Emvee 8,858
If govt and police actually gave a FUC.K this wouldn’t be happening. The inaction and apathy towards black lives taken on the whim of police officers is the cause of those fires. You can expect more fires and more violence the next time a police officer murders a black persons if you want this to just blow over with no resolution. Emvee 8,858
People using the “this doesn’t help anything” narrative are missing the point. There is no “logical” course of action when the justice system doesn’t care about logic. A logical course of action would be for that police office to be in JAIL. The riots are pure rage at this point.
