In my opinion it was only a question when she released her first 2 singles which sound heavily autotuned/edited or are mostly talk-sung, but as soon as she performed live and released further singles it should have been obvious. They've had 12 years to notice. Straights really don’t watch her performances we should remember that. Most straights in Italy would only remember her songs from JD to Alejandro so they didn’t see her vocals improve that much. They don’t even know ARTPOP or Joanne happened so maybe that’s why, at least here but i assume the same thing happened in other countries

Prostitute Barbie 4,077
They didn't pay close enough attention. Even in her early pop records you can hear how vocally talented she is. I remember listening to Just Dance when it first came out and thinking there was a lot more to that voice than we might think and I'm so glad she's shown us what was there all along
MOT 3,197
I was GP until 12 months ago. I can tell you how this works. When Gaga first made it big, she was all over mainstream media for a while, but that was because she was different, not because of her voice or her music. I took a quick look and thought she was a comedy act, a Madonna parody, and filed her away under 'flavour of the month, will get married, have babies, reapoear on a talk show in 15 years time'. Then I forgot about her. Then I saw the Shallow clip by accident and got my socks blown off. Then I started looking her up on youtube and ran out of socks in no time. Even now when I try to tell people about Gaga, the initial reaction is often bewilderment/pity.
