In defense of Lana Del Rey

So, we all know the sh*tstorm going on relating to Lana right now, and if you haven't go check her instagram, its kinda a mess

Anyways, so she posted this statement responding to alot of the criticism that she gets for her lyrical content. I agree, her statement was a bit out of touch in some areas, but everyone jumping on this bandwagon that she is a "racist" without reading what she f*cking said is a issue.

Nowhere in there did she criticize the artists saying that how they write is "Less than" the way she does because they write about sex maybe it came off that way, but this is the woman who sang the lyrics "My p*ssy tastes like pepsi cola" I doubt she meant it that way"

Also, EVERYONE jumped on this bandwagon that she is a "racist" after what she said, which tbh when I first saw what alot of people tweeted, I was thinking "Sis this ain't it". People made her statement out to be "I hate that black women are succeeding because they make songs about sex why can't I get a no. 1 with a song about being submissive I am so oppressed", which really isn't what she said. She simply responded to the claim that she was "Glamorizing abuse" and "Putting the women's rights movement back".

I don't think that she should have brought Doja Cat, Ariana Grande, Camila Cabello, Kehlani, Nicki Minaj, and Beyonce into it, but damn she isn't some crazy racist who hates it when black women achieve, and thinks that writing about sex is "Less than" what she writes about, do I think what she said could be tone deaf? Yes, and I understand why it might come off that way to some people, but blindly claiming that she is a racist without even reading what she had to say is stupid.

I see this pattern in "Cancel culture" where someone says something slightly out of touch and someone tweets it, slightly exaggerating what they said, than other people see that tweet, and tweet a even more exaggerated version of what they said until pretty soon the artist is a "Racist that hates it when black women succeed and thinks she is so oppressed".

Also, cancel culture really doesn't work lets be honest.

And if you are gonna cancel anyone, don't cancel Lana, we LITERALLY have a p*do who has REPITEDLY said the N-Word on Instagram live with a hit song right now, but you all ignore that

Spoiler

This is her original statement, I would recoment if you haven't read it that you read it

Now I understand why it could come off as racist, and I do not fully agree with what she said and it did come off as a bit out of touch, but people branding her as a "racist" is just stupid, and if you disagree with me I am willing to have a civil conversation with you

Lets do it baby I know the Law

'Racist' is such an overused word lately, just like 'blackface' and other words similar to such. Using them at any oppertunity takes away from the REAL meaning of these words and the long history behind them. No opinion on the original situation, but I hate to see artists getting called out over these things when that was clearly not their intention. Her post was extremely insensitive and poorly timed, but it isn't racist. We as a society need to stop throwing that word around like it's nothing, because that couldn't be further from the truth.

I made a post about this already, but I'll TL;DR it here.

She probably feels she can't be purely a 100% genuine version of herself without flak while the songs that she puts out that are happy (or at least more bittersweet or melancholy) are getting her critical acclaim from the start. It's probably messing with her identity and state of mind. And she's been given time to dwell and think on that, and she's expressing it.

This Lana hate train is ridiculous and misogynist. She said absolutely nothing wrong and people are hiding behind PC to bully someone. Disgusting.

My issue with the whole thing is... I don't think she should have posted that initial statement on Instagram in the first place, because

1) How much criticism does Lana get really? I don't think it's as bad as she says it is - the vast majority of the responses to her work are positive... I feel like she's on the defensive because people bring feminism into this and THAT gets to her - the idea she's letting women down by making the kind of art she wants to make... And people who perpetuate those complains are missing the mark because

2) She is an artist, and an artist is gonna do what an artist wants to do - the image that she portrays in her work is the image she enjoys creating, and I don't think an artist needs to have to answer to people clamoring that said work is problematic - so what if it is? It's art... I feel like it shouldn't be on an artist to teach people the difference between performance and real life...

It's the same outlook I have on illustrators who draw pictures of sexy women and that's their entire shtick - it's their art, you're not doing anyone any favors by pointing fingers and those artists and saying 'you're holding the movement back' - you're actually kind of hindering it cuz you're pointing the finger away from the system that actually creates unfair conditions

So, based on those two things, I think... Lana shouldn't have said anything, and she definitely shouldn't have dug her heels in when someone came for her... If someone criticizes her for her work - it doesn't matter... Her statement kind of betrays the amount of confidence she has and I wish she had more confidence in it so that criticism like that wouldn't hit her so personally... Really, the best thing you can do in this situation, if you're confident in your work, is to just continue making it :enigma:

It's a joke! When you give me that look, it's a joke!

Honestly tho, why are people trying to cancel her when there's a literal pedo at the top of the charts right now?
