This really took me by surprise. Add this to the fact that she's affiliated to a homophobic church and things start making sense.

The impression I get of Lana is that she is shy and timid and let's the man take the lead. Some women are happy to play this role. They don't feel like victims and they like having a man be dominant and push them around a little bit. I wouldn't say women like this enjoy the violence when it happens, not all of them get hit in relationships like this, but they accept it because of the roles they have chosen to play kind of like a real life Beauty and the Beast for lack of a better description. 

I do think Ultraviolence glamorises it but songs like Ride and it's music video are better examples that show what she means in a more authentic way. 

I totally get what she was trying to convey with this open letter but I think she poorly worded it which is ironic for somebody who claims to be a poet.
