I actually hate this phenomenon tbh, it's detrimental to the quality of music.
People's attention span... + stream quick quick quick and more, like, I-

Yeah well young people now have shorter attention spans because of technology. It’s a fact of life.

Gaga’s in a business and the purpose of business is to commercialise and capitalise. So they don’t care what music she makes as long as they can sell it and make millions in profit.

Also I’ve just realised that because of her contract, her net worth is the money she makes in a year from everything combined but most of that goes to her record label and then with taxes she probably only earns 10-15% of her net worth per year (so about $30m take-home after tax)

Yeah me too but I try and see the positives.

Enpoverished fans who can’t afford her albums, concert tickets etc can listen to her music for free whilst still supporting her thanks to Spotify.

And should she ever go independent, it’s easy to distribute her music on streaming. Where as before you had to upload it for free or at a high price online or try and get your albums into independent stores.

This is all very fascinating to read about. Not because it's related to Lady Gaga but because it gives us an inside on how the music industry is runned. We can make assumptions that most major label musicians have similar contract agreements.

Born Brave

Gaga is not required to perform with any other royalty artist, and she may refuse such performance for any reason (4.04)

b) she would have had to give Troy his cut because he was associated with the “ARTPOP” project, so any time she performs ARTPOP songs he also gets a cut, same for the streams and sales.

Does this explain why she's only performed Applause, Aura, Sexxx Dreams and Venus outside of the ARTPOP era

I just read an interesting memo from 2016 from Sonja and one of Gaga's attorneys. It stated that, in 2012, she renegotiated her contract with Interscope and thus was given $15 million before singing on to record ARTPOP, and the ARTPOP budget was actually $5 million. It also states that LG7/LG8 are considered to be "optional" endeavors and both have a guaranteed recording budget of at least $3 million.

I believe the memo you're referring to is an internal memo from the law firm and it's Sonia, who seems to be in charge or Gaga's legal work. I don't think it's Sonja her friend. The LG7 and LG8 thing confuse me because there was no amendment for the 8th option in the leak.

So in layman's term, she cannot release a song that was an outtake of an old album of hers unless Interscope says yes?

For example, let's say Gaga wants to use Frankensteined (from the original LG6) or Brooklyn Nights (an outtake of ARTPOP) in her future upcoming album, does that mean she is not allowed to use the said songs unless Interscope says yes?

I believe so. But Interscope also can't do it unless Gaga says yes.

So as it stands now, once Chromatica comes out, how many more albums is she under contract to do through Interscope?

It's either 1 or 2. The last amendment that addressed options said 7. However in a 2016 internal memo between who seems to be her lawyer and the lawyer's boss, she said 7 and 8 were optional. So there might have been an amendment that didn't leak.

At least we know we'll get an album in 120 days of her turning it in

maybe that's why Chromatica is coming out so soon.

yah. i go to music school and lots of people talk about that normally an artist who isn't successful before the contract will only get about 10% maybe 15% of the money their music makes so it's better to stay unsigned for as long as possible so you can get a good deal.

Economy

I find it interesting how the 3rd album (if they count TFM as an album that means they mean Born This Way) got such a massive increase in fund budget

Perhaps the $575,000 to just over $1M contract was made at a time they didn't anticipate Gaga to become so huge hence the surge to $14,000,000 :duck:
