How do you really feel about idolizing a rich popstar such as Gaga?

I think you really need to evaluate your idolization of her. Because it sounds a bit concerning that you went into that deep of a mental search trying to understand it. 

I don’t know if idolize should be the best word to describe your feelings toward Gaga. We shouldn’t idolize anybody to the point where we worship them. I think having a supporter mindset is much healthier. A mindset where you don’t have to agree or like everything she does or releases, but at the same time appreciating all the good things she’s done throughout her career and her artistry. It’s really not that deep and it shouldn’t be that deep.

She is my favorite artist not because of her money and fame, but because of the content she produces and her mindset to topics I think are important to think and talk about.

Gaga has the voice and the platforms, sometimes she speaks on behalf of many and she knows how important it is to practice her leadership. I see her as one of the leaders in the music industry.

I feel she is genuine and a good representation of a responsible and talented popstar, who knows how to express herself for the better.

I don’t idolize her. I know she’s human and I’m not going to agree with everything she does. That being said, I think most of her choices are done with good intentions. I look up to her as a person and admire her talent and kind ways. But she isn’t on a pedestal.

Idk. Is it so wrong to have deep love and admiration, and to look to someone as a source or hope and inspiration even if they happen to be a celebrity that you don’t have a personal relationship with? I think Gaga fills a void for a lot of people, that they have not received from personal relationships.

I accept I’ve had an idolizing behavior and I haven’t noticed all of the times,

but one thing that helped me stop doing it is conceiving her as a normal person, and as a person she’s showing us her job side as much as it’s close to her personal life, it’s her job and it’s what she wants us to see

I totally agree with you, I don't think a full-on idolization wherein your fave does no wrong is unhealthy. I wouldn't say I'm like that. Although, I can say that a large percentage of my creative and philosophical references come from Gaga. I do sound too obsessive on my original post, I can't help it I'm a naturally obsessive person. 

I guess I went into too deep of a mental search with all this, because all of this questioning of Gaga permeated from a bigger question that I asked myself. I've been looking at the world around us as of late and it just really has an inefficient system. I'm young and I never did like watching the news or researching on topics about politics. But with our situation with COVID it just got me looking at the world and thinking about the different kinds of people in our society. Do the 'elites' really need that much money?

I agree with you. I want nothing more for Gaga to have continous success! But, another part within me believes that being too rich is unethical. There are so many injustices in the world. So much suffering happening simultaneously, I just can't wrap my head around having that much money without considering all these things.

 

I am aware that I may be called a hypocrite. Because ultimately, I still will partake in the system you are talking about. I still am a middle-classed person who in no way will be able to bring Capitalism to it's end. But, I think thinking about these things and having discussions about it are important.

I don’t idolise her, in fact I’m very critical of her at times because I want her to be the best version of herself - and I know what she’s capable of as a person and artist. 
I've been checking on her at least every now and then since BTW era,, it’s become a routine not so much an obsession like before. Like a longtime friend you can not text in a couple of months but always remains part of you, you know? Not like an idol on a pedestal

You perfectly worded how I truly feel. I realized the parasocial relationship I had with Gaga was too strong. I was disturbed by it, but not because I hate Gaga. I was disturbed by it because I felt like I was getting too detached from reality from liking her. I recognized how only art, expression, pop culture, LGBTQ+ Activisim became too much of the most important things to me. I forgot that there's a whole world around me with a lot of other issues. Creativity, fashion, art and sexuality are all very important to me. But, I think it's time I let go of these things a bit and started learning about other things.

I certainly idolised her when I was a teenager, I don't think it's bad to have an idol when you're growing up, especially when they're generally trying to make the world a better place.  I can't explain how it made me feel when she released Born This Way when I was 16, it was like she was growing up with me?  It was great.

I don't want to sound like I'm talking down to you, but if you're a teenager or a very young adult, I wouldn't overthink your fascination with her.  You're learning what you like and your taste will change, expand etc. - just enjoy what you like for now

I’m happy for her to get them coins but I refuse to be a cash cow. I might buy a CD, or a vinyl if I really like the cover.. A tee shirt as present for my family on Christmas.. maybe I buy a concert ticket if the dates are convenient.. 

I don’t care if she earns millions on a Vegas performance. I can’t relate to that but I get it why she does it.

I did an Enigma M&G, and I've already shared my thoughts on that, so I'll aim to keep them short here. I'm not the kind of person who would normally pay for a M&G and only did it for my sister's birthday, but the whole thing felt wrong to me. Aside from the obscene amount of money we had to pay, I felt really uncomfortable with the set-up. The Enigma M&G comes with a pre-show reception and backstage tour, and I actually liked both of those parts of the experience. The actual M&G itself however felt artificial and awkward. The night we were there, people were rushed through and basically only had a chance to say a quick greeting to her and then were instructed to pose for a photo and leave. Only the very last person had any quality interaction with Gaga. 

My sister was extremely disappointed and felt ripped off, and it definitely changed how she thinks of Gaga and has made her question how much of Gaga's persona is simply a façade. I'm not a person who idolizes celebrities to begin with; I appreciate Gaga's work but don't put her on a pedestal, so I talked to her like she was a normal person, and I found her to be very down-to-earth, but I also realized from this process that I am the "wrong" kind of fan for M&Gs. I wasn't crying and telling her how she'd changed or saved my life, and I was more interested in talking to her than coming up with a cute pose for the photo, which I think made her staff eager to move me on because I treated her like an equal and wasn't playing their game of gushing over her and then striking a dramatic pose. 

I'll admit that when I read "In Chromatica, no one thing is greater than another," it's hard for me to take these words seriously. I still believe Gaga is probably very genuine, and I think it'd be super cool to hang out with her in a dive bar and just chat, but the very fact of her being a celebrity is at odds with this message, because celebrity culture at its core creates divisions in which certain people are put on pedestals/placed in gilded cages and the rest of us are supposed to fawn over them. 

You articulated a lot of what I feel, I relate. I think Gaga is a good person, I really do. But, I think there is something internally flawed about celebrity culture. And because of this, I will always find something off-putting about Gaga. Maybe it won't always be Gaga's fault, but because that is the industry she is in there will always be something unethical about certain actions she makes.
