Sorry but calling it a Chinese virus or Wuhan virus, is NOT RACIST

Diseases named after regions is very common.

Zika virus (a forest), Guinea worm (a country), Japanese encephalitis (a country), West Nile virus (a river), German measles (a country), Spanish flu (a country), Ebola (a river), Marburg virus (a German city), Lassa fever (a Nigerian town)

And let's not forget Lyme disease is named for a town in Connecticut. Norovirus is named for Norwalk, Ohio. Rocky Mountain spotted fever. And the Spanish Flu we don't actually know where it came from but we still call it that. Is it still racist?

The problem is the intention.

When you got an already racist president putting 100% of the blame on China and when you have outlets like FOX News saying that the blame for this virus falls 100% on China, it's now become about blaming the Chinese people.

Let's also not forget that there have been more discriminatory and racists attacks against Asians now because of this outbreak.

Yes, technically speaking, naming it after the country where it originated is not bad, per se, but it's the meaning behind why people are calling it the "Chinese virus" that is upsetting.

Don't find that racist at all. Am I problematic for thinking that? It might be generalising, a little angry sounding, stereotyping and potentially xenophobic, but where the hell was the racist comment? You know, about their skin tone, etc? Get rid 🥱🤣 But you know what, he has every right to be angry. He makes awesome music so I don't care

how is this racist? it’s a generalization, sure but it’s not racist. The CCP allowed wet markets to exist and fed the WHO false info about it not being transmittable.

Criticizing the people that happened to be Chinese that created and spread this virus and for their government not giving us a heads up until it's too late is now racism

Social media being pretend woke as usual

It's already disputed whether or not the largest spread happened because of a wet market and someone eating a bat so it's basically ignorant to keep peddling it. It's some patient zero with AIDS kind of crap. It is ignorant to how pandemics work. Also you can criticize a government without criticizing its people (i.e. you are not necessarily anti-semitic for hating on the Israeli government).

So basically it's just ill-informed and people call it racist when others are so eager to believe and scapegoat a specific group or person foreign to them. To juxtapose, white people *never* own colonial history. You get lots of people saying, "meh not all white people! I'm a good guy!" but then they turn around and say things like chinese people are dirty and have bad, gross food. It's hypocrisy. So it isn't pretend woke, it is deconstructing an incongruous argument, albeit in a simplified way.

Of note, I have no skin in this game here. I'm just pointing out why people get rankled over things like this.

His claim that they “created” the virus is unfounded. No one’s really saying he’s “racist” (because when people use the word it seems to be more offensive to some on GGD than racism itself :laughga:) but he definitely is making assumptions without facts about a group of people who have already been unjustly targeted and blamed as a whole for the acts of only a (possible) few. It comes off as immature and uninformed.

Rich vegans peddling veganism around the world is some kind of privileged blinders. They really assume that every person eating meat is lazy, an a**hole or something like that when you need to more realistically look at food disparities. Veganism itself is fine; people being arses is not.

I don’t think what he said is racist. Could it have been worded better for the 2020 social media warriors who will dissect every character to cancel someone? Yes. Is he way too angry for his own good? Yes. Is his information about the virus outdated? Yes.

But I fail to see any racism in there, even if he is implying on where it originated... well, it originated there and they tried to silence it for a good time, including WHO & Dr Tedros who took ages to announce it and escalate it to a pandemic.

Also, I ask you to read on it some more because it was in fact not a natural progression or mutation of a virus. The nearest relative to it RaTG13 is far from a close match. Find sources other than the PR blizzard from the scientists who actually worked in the research lab in Wuhan to get information. Of COURSE they would deny it leaked from there or that they messed with the gnome sequence.
