The Grammy's are racist and they don't matter

Tl;dr the Grammy's aren't relevant to music.

Not only have very famous and acclaimed bands and artists been snubbed for decades, the Grammy's doesn't give black artists the awards they deserve. The 2010's especially was a groundbreaking decade for black music and rap becoming the the dominant genre in America.

I didn't think this was a big issue until there was a pattern every year. Not a single black artist won Album of the Year, despite many black artists defining the year and the decade.

Sure the Grammys would give those awards for best Urban Contemporary Album which is just a made up category to reward them instead of nominating for the pop category, which a lot of them are, or giving them their most prestigious award. A complaint Tyler the Creator made when his album Igor should have been nominated in the pop categories for being... a pop album. But being a black musician, they put him in a box.

Remember when Adele won over Beyonce? Are both of them talented, yes, but did Adele's really deserve it again just for selling a lot? One album defined black culture, feminism, and being a black woman with anthems like Formation and Sorry, incorporating multiple genres and was one the most acclaimed and celebrated album of that year. Beyonce defined the pop culture zeitgeist and would become one the the most iconic performers of her time. This would be Beyonce's third time being snubbed. While Adele gets awarded for releasing a generic safe contemporary album with no innovation whatsoever, it was 21 part 2. Adele's acceptance speech was basically praising how much she respected Beyonce and how important her album was to her black friends and go she deserved it. Just like how she won in 2012, Kanye West got ignored for the Album of the Year nomination despite his album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy being the most acclaimed album of 2010 and reached artistic peaks in hip hop. Beyonce would also lose to Beck whose album people didn't even know came out and wasn't even that good compared to his discography and her album.

Or how Kendrick Lamar lost three times. He lost against Kacey Musgraves for Damn which also had five other black artists lost against her, including Janelle Monae and Drake. And just like Bruno Mars winning the year prior. I have nothing against Kacey Musgraves and Bruno Mars, I like their music but... it just shows that it doesn't matter how many black artists get nominated, they'll still lose. Before that he lost to Taylor Swift. To Pimp a Butterfly is one of the most important albums of the decade. An album that spoke about racism, police brutality, being a black man in America. America wasn't ready to hear this, but in no way was Taylor Swift's pop album better then a classic hip hop masterpiece. An album which would be considered one of the greatest rap albums and greatest albums of all time. White mediocrity would win again when Macklemore would receive best new artist over him. After that, he had to apologize to Kendrick for winning because he knew he didn't deserve it. Macklemore flopped after that award.

Frank Ocean who opened up about his sexuality and dropped a groundbreaking album would lose against the band Fun for best new artist and the band Mumford and Sons for album of the year. But anyone would tell you Frank was truly the artist of 2012 and his album had more creativity then Mumford's album. I swear to God I was crying when he performed Forest Gump. How brave was it for a black R&B singer to sing about loving another man in front of millions of people. Frank Ocean would be the one snubbing the Grammys with Blonde. Honestly, where are those bands now?

There are always lame reasons to excuse this. "The Grammys are out of touch and reward older musicians past their prime over popular singers", so why did Taylor Swift win for being pop? "The Grammys reward pop singers for ratings and because they like popular music." So why did Beck win over Beyonce? None of these excuses make sense when you see black musicians constantly being ignored for releasing better music. Let's be honest, black artists were more innovating, exciting, and broke more ground when it came to music the past decade. They have to try twice as hard to be noticed, and still lose.

The Grammy voters are racist and are out of touch with modern black music. And I refuse to take them seriously as an important music award.

She never won album of the year after being snubbed three times! Or even record or song of the year or best new artist. They throw her a bone because she has little competition in the pop categories.

What do you mean by "they throw her a bone because she has little competition in the pop categories."?

Sayamama and MOTS: 7 will be completely snubbed, even in pop categories :saladga:

the truth is that the grammys simply don't award for critical success, they award for commercial success, then pick an 'alternative' album like golden hour every couple of years to make them look good

And they're all in the "black categories" not the main prizes. It's easy to win a lot of awards for best R&B or best rap album.

Those are all the awards she ever won. She can easily win awards for the pop categories because she's obviously the more talented singers to be nominated in them. So it's easy win for her. She still has been ignored for the awards people care about.

maybe that's because she makes r&b music? a large percentage of her discography IS r&b or rap, do you want them to give her best country album or sumn?

Kendrick Lamar has 12 Grammys, Jay-Z and Kanye have 17, John Legend has 11.
