Doot 2
You're arguing against things I never said. I agree: I do think Gaga wants attention and fans. Especially since one of the things she clearly is infatuated with and wants to comment on, and the subject of a lot of her art, is fame. And again, I doubt Die Antwoord themselves would say "no" to becoming as big as Gaga, they just demonstrated there are certain things they wouldn't do to achieve that (as I'm sure there are plenty of things Gaga wouldn't budge on as well). I never said anything to the contrary, and never said that Gaga and Die Antwoord weren't interested in any level of commercial success. What I said was I don't think art is validated through commercial success. And even with Gaga's own commercial success being vital to her, given her beginnings, and given her clear knowledge of art in general, I highly doubt she would disagree. Lots of **** art becomes massively popular, and lots of great art struggles. We all know that, and Gaga knows that. But to understand that, I am pretty sure Gaga knows that commercial success is not what makes good art as well. However, Die Antwoord's idea of art, is murdering another artist...that's not art. That's retarded. Edited October 18, 2012 by nickymeatball

Well, if Gaga understands that (and I'm sure she does) I just wish she wouldn't throw her sales around to prove her cred. How bout the fact that she's as "freaky" as Die Antwoord wishes they were? Just stand up for your art, not how many people buy your art. And while overall, I really like Die Antwoord's aesthetic sensibilities, I agree: this was pretty lame and uncalled for. And, as I've said, hypocritical. Which is what Gaga really should have pointed out, if anything. Really, this situation does remind me a lot of MIA's beef: genuinely talented indie artist known to be abrasive and outspoken and who thinks they're the **** because they're "truly" progressive and radical trashes Gaga for being "faux-radical." MIA was wrong and a hypocrite, so is Die Antwoord.

Celina 118
Mostly, I think you're right, in regards to it not being a huge deal (it's not. at all.), and it was probably a tweet she made rather offhandedly without much thought. But it still has those implications, and I find that a little disappointing. That's all. I'm no less of a fan. I don't think she's any less of a person. Just a silly incident that could have been handled better. I do agree that she could have handled it better. But isn't everyone (even someone who's in the spotlight) allowed to slip up once in a while? I see your point though, and I think you've expressed that better than most people have. Under other circumstances, I'd be disappointed too. My main reason for defending her in this case really isn't what she said, it's what made her say it. I feel like I haven't really worded that right before. Edited October 18, 2012 by manateegrlcellie

I admit: the video is intense. And I can only imagine what it's like to have a band so resent your presence that they *kill* you in a video. I also admit: I hold Gaga to impossible standards. But it's because I respect her so much as an artist. She maintains so much integrity, and it's truly refreshing. And now I'm going to sound gushing and downright obsessively goofy but: it's genuinely invigorating for me to see a person maintain the positivity she has, to show the world that in the face of their negative ****, she can still be compassionate and take the high road. It's so easy to be cynical. The world turns us all into cynics. But Gaga has been a pretty incredible answer to that cynicism, and that's one of the reasons I'm such a passionate fan. So, yeah, I admit I hold her to impossible standards. Like I said, I won't be any less of a fan. Not at all. Just pointing out what made me think twice about this whole deal. MIA was wrong and a hypocrite, so is Die Antwoord. But that's the point I am trying to make. Simply because she referenced her sales, does not mean that she isnt referencing her art. To Gaga, those are one in the same. Her "art" is what got her the sales. She didn't have to stoop to trashing other artists in order to get recognized. Her art spoke for itself, hence why she is basically the top woman in the world right now. If Die Antwoord's art was so pristine, then they wouldnt have needed to bash her. Plain and simple. DirtyIceCream 9
So let me get this straight, This band makes a whole video slamming GaGa and goes as far so to brutally kill her in it..using GaGa's fame to garner views and media attention towards them (which obviously worked) after she asked them to perform on her sold out stadium shows..and GaGa is the horrible one for using her fame status in a tweet towards them..uhmm yeah. She's such a horrible person. Edited October 18, 2012 by DirtyIceCream
NIKE 262
this is getting them attention though, I had never really heard of them until this incident and have been listening to them on youtube a little bit - and kinda like their music it sucks that they are being so rude about this incident though to go out and feature a GaGa look-a-like in your video is some serious shade. Why did they decline to open for her? What is their deal - the girl scares me with the eyes (I kinda like it though) and how does she get away with blackface oh and how do her eyes look like that all the time O.O

Those nuances are what we've all been discussing here. I don't think anybody in this thread has said or believes that Gaga's tweet is as uncalled for as Die Antwoord's video. DirtyIceCream 9
I was being sarcastic in my whole post lmao. I'm making a point about how dumb people sound for saying GaGa is wrong for tweeting that..they threw around her fame to garner attention for their video, we have almost 30 pages on this board about it. Yet GaGa used her fame status back to show them who is in charge. :creepflop:That's my gurl. Edited October 18, 2012 by DirtyIceCream
